TO ALIS WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: a Be itknorvn that we, Tneooonn WALLIS, ALFRED B. MATIOON, and OiIAoNoEY E. TUTLER, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Shackles for Attaching Thills to Wagons; and we do hereby declare that the following is. a clear, full, and exact description of thesame, reference being had .to the annexeddrawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, as constituting a part-of this specification, in which a i Figure 1 is a perspective. 1 Figure 2 represents the manner of constructing the'lo'w er end of the thill.
Figure 3 is a ;section of the shackle and thill attached. The nature of'our invention consists in'providing a chamber in the head of the shackle, in which thelower end of the thill is placed, and secured by means of a slide, in the manner hereinafter fully set forth. A represents the shackle, in the-head ofwhich is a chamber, said chamber being constructed in the manner represented-in figs. 1 and 2. His the lower end of the, thill, which is provided. with ears a a, and is designed to be placed in the chamber of'shnckle' A. It should be observed that we make the ears (ta rounding in order that the thill may work in the chamber as a hinge. C represents a slide, which should fit snugly into the chamher, though not too tight. The formof this slide is fully shown in fig. 3. d is a bolt, which passes through the shackle and also through the slide, in order thatwhen said slide is properly .placed it may be fi mly secured.-
e is a not, by me'ans'of whichthe bolt d is securely held". Thus 'it will be seen that when the lower end of the thill is properly adjusted in the chamber of shackle A,andthe slide 0 is placed over the ears a a and secured by means of bolt d and nut c, a most simple and eiTective attachment isformed Having thus'dcscribed' our invention, what we claim is i i Shackle A, whenprovided with a receptacle, as described, in combination withslide G, as constructelLand bothvbeing employed in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own 'we hereby afiixour signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
