Beitknown that I, ALONZO H. IVOOD, acitizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Deliance, county of Defiance, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller- Bearing Axle-skeins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in roller-bearing .axle-skeins for Wagons.
The object of the invention is to produce a roller-bearing support for wheels of wagons which will be at once simple, practical, and sufficiently economical in cost of construction to admit of its use upon comparatively inexpensive vehicles, such as the large class of farm and road wagons to which this form of bearing has not heretofore been applied on account of the expense.
The details of the improvement will be set forth in the following description and pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the axle skein and bearings. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation, showing the hub partially withdrawn for the removal or insertion of the inner set of rollers. Fig. 3 is an end view with the cap-nut removed.
A is the skein, which is made of any suitable metal and may, if desired, form the end portion or continuation of the axle; but, as here shown, said skein is hollow to receive the ordinary wooden axle, to which it is secured by a screw a in the outer end. The exterior of the skein has a strong flange B near the butt or inner end, and extending from said flange is a cylindrical part O, a little more than twice as long as the rollers D, which bear upon its rear or inner portion. A like, though preferably smaller, cylindrical portion E is formed at the opposite end of the skein, which may be a little longer than the rollers e, which bear upon it.
F is a cap-nut which engages the screwthreaded extension j from the skein A.
G is the box, which fits over the skein and may be secured in the hub of a wheel. The box G has the usual conical form and may be annularly contracted at or near its middle, as at g. At its ends the box is interiorly provided with a rear cylindrical portion I and a forward or outer cylindrical portion J, the latter being of less diameter than the former and these portions being coincident with, and therefore `surrounding the cylindrical bearing-surfaces C and E, respectively. The cylindrical portion I is for a distance less than one-half its entire length recessed annularly, as at K, such recess occurring at its rear end. The fact that this recess K is of somewhat less than half thelength of the cylindrical portion is very material and forms a most im portant part of my invention, all as will hereinafter appear. lVithin the annular recess K is located a series of rollers D,and a similar series of rollers e is located in the cylindrical portion J.
With this construction when it is desired to remove, inspect, renew, or lubricate the rollers I) the box G and the wheel to which it is secured when in position can be withdrawn, so as to partly or wholly uncover the rollers D. The cylindrical portion I of the box G, just forward of the shoulderII of the box, will under these circumstances be supported upon the cylindrical portion of the skein A and sustain the box in a practical concentric position upon the skein irrespective of the rollers D, as indicated in Fig. 2, permitting of the removal or insertion of the rollers D, which will be pushed up into line by the shoulder H when the box is moved up into operative position. The end rollers e are comparatively easy to handle, as they are pushed out as the box G is moved forward in the direction of removal from the skein A. They can in this manner be brought forward any desired distance or until they drop out, when they are readily reinserted after the rear bearings and the box are in place. The flange of the capnut Fis of sufficient width to cover the outer bearings and end of box G, forming an abutment to securelyhold them in position. The skein is made in a single piece or may be formed upon and act as a continuation of the axle when the latter is of metal. The box G is made in a single piece, so as to be thoroughly strong and durable and to admit of being forced into the hub of the wheel.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a skein having an IOO . thereof.` with an internal annular recess and opposite the rear surface of said box provided with an internal annular recess of a Width slightly less than one-half of the cornpanion surface of the said skein, rollers located in said recessesmhereby the box may be Withdrawn longitudinally from tlie skein a.
