To all whom it may con/cern.-

Be it known that I, WARREN SMITH, residing at Hawkinsville, in the county of Pulaski and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Seed Droppers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in cottonseed droppers,and has for an object to provide a simple economical construction whichwill efficiently serve the desired purpose; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as Will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of a cotton-seed dropper constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine.

The machine has a framing comprising the two side beams A A. These beams A are lapped at their front ends on opposite sides of the draft-bar B, to whichthey are secured by the bolts C, such bolts serving to rigidly connect the front ends of the. beams as well as to secure said beams to the draft connection B. This draft connection B has the horizontal arm B', which is lapped between thefront ends of the beams A and the upright arm B2 at the front end of the arm B', which upright arm is suitably adapted for the attachment of the draft devices, it may be, by providing said arm with perforations b2 to receive the draft-hook of a whiiiietree or in other suitable manner as may be desired.

such bolt will operate to lock the track-clearer in position.

The beams A are provided in rear of the clearerD with bearings for the opener-wheel E, such bearings being preferably provided in blocks E', secured to the under side of the beams A, as shown in Figs. l and 3. This wheel E not only operates to form a cut in the ground to receive the cotton-seed, but it also gives motion to the seed-dropping drum. To

this end its axle E is provided with a sprocket-wheel E2, receiving the sprocket-chain F, which also passes around a sprocket-wheel G' on the seed-dropping drum G, as'shown in Fig. 1. The drum G has pockets g, and is suit- Hably journaled in bearings a onthe beams A, and operates between cross-beams H H, which extend between the beams A, one in advance and the other in rear of the drum G.

The seedbox I is supported on the crossbars H and the side beams A and iits over the drum G,having in its bottom a concaved plate K, provided centrally with an openingk, with which register the pockets g in the drum G as the latter is turned in the operation of the machine. This concave plate properly directs the seed to the pockets g and prevents any waste during the operation'of planting.

This shaft'MAis journaled to the seedbox and is provided Within the saine with stirrer-arms m, which tend to agitate the seeds and prevent the same from becoming too Alumpy to properly discharge as the dropping-drum is revolved.

The coverer-blade N extends from side to side below the rear part of the seedbox and in rear of the seed-dropping drum and is connected by the spring-blades N' with the blocks E3. These blades extend on opposite sides of the pockets g of the seed-dropping drum G, and therefore do not interfere with the seeddropping operation. The spring-blades, together with the coverer, form an elastic A springy support for the rear end of the seedprovide an opening D for the upright portion dropping device, and thus render the operation of same easier, as will be readily understood. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- An improvement in cotton-seed droppers consisting in the combination of the seedbox having the concave plate K provided with the opening 7o, the beams spaced apart and supporting the seedbox at their rear ends, the opening-wheel, the boxes for said Wheel secured to the opposite beams, the seed-dropping drum journaled below the plate'K and IOO the boxes of the opening-wheels and the draftbar having arms B and B and opening D', the track-clearer D notched at d and the cross-bolt C all substantially as and for the purpose set 15 forth.'
