TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PETER Lnwrnn, of Riehrnondvlle, Sehoharie county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Metallic Gange-Head and Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a Vlongitudinal section of my improved'ga-uge-head and fastenertaken through theline :n z, fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of' the same taken through the line y y, 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its objectl to furnish an improved gangediead, simple in construction, easily, quickly, and accurately adjusted, and which, when its face has been ence made at right angles to the rod, will always remain so; and it consists, first, in the combination of the cam-lever, lever-spring, and plate with each other; and second, in the combination of the flanged and slotted metallicy eye with the plate, lever-spring, and'camlever., .as hereinafter more fully described. A
A is the gauge-rod, which is made in the ordinary manner, and may be made of woodvor metal, as may be desired. -B is the eye of the gauge-head, which is made long, as shown in fig. 1, and lhas a broad flange, b, around three sides of-its forward end, which forms the face of the gauge-head. The `i'ace of the ange bl is so made as'to be exactly at right angles to the rod A. The fourth side of the eye .1 3 is slotted, and the edges of said 4slot are flanged, which said flanges project upward at the front and rear endsof the oye B, and form ears, b2 and b3. C is a plate fitting into the hole through theI ey'e B, between the rod A and the slotted side of the said eye, as shown in figs. Iand 2. The ends ofthe plate C are slightly turned up or Banged, to prevent it from slipping` ont of place when the gauge-head is moved backward or forward along the red A. To the rear ears b3 is pivoted the lever-spring D, which is of such a length and size as to fit exactly into the slot formed in the'eye B, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. 'lothe forward ears, b2, is pivoted the cam-lever E, the cani e of which, when the iever is in the position shown in fig. 1, presses down upon the lever-spring D. and forces the spring D and plate C against the rod A, securing the gauge-head rmly and immovably to the said rod. But when the cam-lever is raised into a vertical position, the gauge-head can be moved into and adjusted in any desired position, the said lever E being held in either position by the elasticity of thespring D.
I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent v v The combination Aof the cam-lever E, lever-spring D, plate C, flanged and slotted metallic eye B, substahtially as described, for the purpose specified.
