The improvements consist in the construction, novel combination, and arrangement of parts fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the more readily understood and carried into practical effect, reference is hereby made to the accompanying illustrative drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of the improved stationary buffer with a portion of a truck the load of which has been displaced by jerks or otherwise. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the buffer and truck shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 with the load of the truck brought again into its proper original position.
In the drawings like letters refer to like parts throughout all the figures.
The improved stationary buffer consists principally of four uprights a b c d, preferably made of old iron orsteel rails and connected to each other by suitable cross-bars c and mounted on a foundation made of wood planks or stonework. In order to prevent the footrest h from contacting with or engaging the outer uprights o. and d, the latter are curved inwardly at these points, as shown in Figs. l and 3. To the fore part of the uprights a b c d is adjustably secured a strong `plate e., adapted to be adj usted to the respective heightv of the truck by means of suitable levers (not shown) or in any preferred Way. Said plate serves as a rest to the load L of the truck.

The uprights a b c d are strengthened by diagonal braces a b' c' d', connected to each other by cross-dars 0c' and to said diagonal braces are rigidly secured other uprights o? b2 c2 d2, carrying the buffer-tie g. The position of the latter is such that the distance between the same and the rest-plate e is equal to the projection of the car or truck buffers from thehead-wall of said car or truck, so that said car or truck buffers engage said buffer-tie g after the displaced load has been moved again into its original position. This may be readily done by the aid of the locomotive, the latter pressing against the car or truck, whereby the load will engage said plate c'and be forced backward until the car or truck buffers are brought into contact with the buffer-tie g.
Iwould have it understood that I do not limit my invention to the particular form or arrangement of the construction herein shown and described, as it is evident that many changes in said construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Thus instead' of forming the various parts of the buffer apparatus of old iron or steel rails said parts may be constituted by solid wood beams or even any suitable stonework, as desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

In a buifer for railway-cars, the combination with a backing or support, of a buer carried thereby and adapted to be struck by a displaced load on the truck, and a second buffer arranged in rear of the first buffer so as to be struck by the truck-buifers after the displaced load has come in contact with and been shifted by its buffer into proper position on the truck.
2. In a buffer for railway-cars, the combination with a backing or support and a plate supported thereby and adapted to be adj usted vertically and to form a buer against Which a displaced load on a car may be forced, of al buer so located in rear of the said adj ustable plate and its support as to be struck by buffers on the car after the load thereon has struck the adjustable buffer and been forced back into proper position on the car.
