UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. FARMER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,434, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed September 17, 1898.` Serial No. 691,252. (No model.) i
To all wlwnt it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Commodes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a portable commode that can be readily cleaned and which is kept perfectly sealed when in use.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective View of my commode. Fig. II is a vertical section. Fig. III is a view of the under side of the hinged seat of the commode, the seat being shown in section. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail section.
1 represents a stand, the legs 2 of which are hinged to the top 3, as shown at 4, so as to be folded, as represented by dotted lines, Fig. I, the legs being held in their open position by braces 5.
6 represents the seat, hinged at 7 to the top 3. To the under side of this seat is removably secured a lsack 8 by means of a ring 9, through which the mouth of the sack is passed and turned over, as shown in Fig. IV. The ring is hinged to the under side of the seat at 10 and is held in its closed position by turnbuttons 11. y
12 represents a packing tube or ring secured by flanges 13 to the under side of the seat and against which the sack is held by the ring 9, so as to make a perfectly tight tiallyas set forth.
joint. The sack is thus held to the seat in a manner that permits of its ready and easy removal when after use the sack is to be thrown away and replaced by another.
The cover 14 of the article is hinged to the seat at 15 and is provided' with a packingstrip 16 and a catch 17, whereby it may be held air-tight upon the seat.
By making the sack 8 of flexible material,
such as oiled cloth or rubber, and by hing-` ing the legs the article as a whole can be folded into a compact bundle when not in use, and When the sack is removed the mouth of it can be closed to seal the contents.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A commode comprising a seat and supL port therefor, a bag, and a hinged ring by which said bag is removably secured to the under side of said seat, substantially as set forth.
2. AA commode comprising a seat and support therefor, a packing-ring secured to the under side of said seat, a bag and a ring for removably holding said bag against said pack ing-ring, substantially as set forth.
A portable commode comprising a seat and a support therefor, a 'packing-ring se cured to the under side of said seat, a bag, a ring for removably holding the bag against said packing-ring, and a lid hinged to the seat and having a packing-stripl, substan JAMES D. FARMER.
In presence of- E. S. KNIGHT,
N. V. ALEXANDER.
