HOSE COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 628,765, dated July 11, i899. Application filed April 13, 1899. Serial No. 712,906. (No model.)
To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN COLLETTE, a itizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county ofMiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain newand useful. Improvements in Hose-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention is animproved hose-coupling; and its object is to provide a construction which will make a close locking-joint between the members of the coupling and prevent the ingress of sand, grit, or the like between the adjacent faces of the parts, as now frequently occurs, with the result that these faces are quickly worn out of aline, a close fit is prevented, and the coupling rendered ineffective and leaky.
By my improved construction I place a spring tension or pressure upon the adjacent faces of the coupling, keeping them always in contact and at the same time adding to the safety of the lock between the parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional VlGW' through the coupling, showing parts in elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail face View of one part, and Fig. 3 a perspective View of the other part.
The ring A has a threaded extension at, to which is secured the collar 1), of ordinary construction and adapted for connection with one end of the hose. To the front face of the ring A is secured a compound ring made up of two flanged parts B C, the ring B having an outwardly-extending flange secured to the face'of the ring A by screws 0. The ring 0 fits upon the periphery of the ring 13 and has a flange (Z overhanging the front edge of the ring B. The parts of the compound ring are secured together loosely to prevent separation by pins 6 on the inner face of the ring 0 entering elongated slots in the ring B, which while preventing disengagement of the parts allows of a certain amount of movement relatively to each other for a purpose hereinafter referred to. The ring B is provided with longitudinal openings g extending from front to rear, and these openings contain spring-pins h, the outer ends of which bear against the inner face of the flange d and tend to force the ring 0 outwardly in relation to the ring B. The rear ends of the spring-pins find resistance against the face of the ring A.
V The ring A has a shoulder to receive a gasket i and also an inwardly-extending annular flange Z, which is cut with bayonet-joint notches adapted to receive the lugs m on the oppositecoupling-section D. The spring-pins h tend to throw out the face of the ring 0 beyond the outer edge of the flange Z, and when the parts are placed together sufficient pressure is necessary to force in the ring 0 slightly to permit the lugs m to engage the bayonetjoints of the flange l, and as soon as the parts engage the spring-pins put apressure upon the parts, forcing out the ring 0 into close contact with the flange n of the coupling D, resisting any tendency to separate and preventing grit from entering between the opposing faces. The spring tension also renders more secure the locking action, as the projections 0 of the joints have slight inwardly-extending projections 12, and to disengage the parts inward compression of the coupling-sections is necessary.
What I claim is- 1. Acoupling comprising aring A, a second ring secured thereto, a third ring having loose connection with the second ring, springs between the second and third rings, a lockingflange carried by the first ring and a second section having lugs to engagethe lockingflange, substantially as described.
2. A coupling comprising a ring A, a compound ring secured thereto, the parts of said compound ring being loosely connected, springs between the outer member of the compressed ring and the ring A, a locking-flange carried by the ring A and a second section having lugs adapted to engage the lockingflange and having a flange to contact with the face of the spring-pressed ring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
hi JOHN COLLETTE.
