in Turbines, of which the following is a full.
and complete specication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hydraulic-power apparatus and particularly to turbine wheels and the object thereof is to provide avariable wheel of this class in which the flow of water through or from the wheel or through or from the buckets with which the wheel is provided may be regulated, a further object being to provide a turbine wheel which is provided with buckets of novel form and construction, whereby great power is obtained with a minimum head or supply of water.
The invention is the same as that for which Letters Patent were granted in Great Britain, No. 19,398, dated September 9, 1896, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is atransverse section of our improved wheel and the principal parts of the mechanism connected therewith Fi g. 2, a plan view of three of the buckets which we ernploy, one of said buckets being shown in longitudinal section; and Fig. 3, an outside view of said buckets.
In the drawings formingl part of Athis specification the separate parts of our improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views; and in said drawings, reference being made to Fig. l, we have shown at P an annular plate which supports the water-supply R, which consists of a metal ring provided at the upper side with an outwardly-directed rim R2, which rests on the plate P, and at the lower side thereof with `an outwardly-directed annular lip R3, and we have also shown at S the main shaft on which the turbine wheel W is mounted, and said p Above the wheel W 1s a vertically-movable circular disk or plate A, provided with ahub a, through which the shaft S passes, and said hub is provided at its lower end with a collar C, through which the shaft S also passes, and at its upper end with a hydraulic washer or gland L, which is designed to stop leakage through the hub a of the disk or plate A, and said disk or plate A is provided at its pe'- rimeter with vertical rods a2, which pass upwardly through lbearings as, formed in the ring R, and said rods a2 may be provided withany suitable means for raising and lowering the disk or plate A, and by means of this constructionthe space between the perimeter of the disk or plate A and the lip R3 of the water-supply R may be adjusted as desired, and the amount of water passing through said space may thus be regulated.

and said buckets are of the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the youter surface thereof beingrconvex longitudinally and the inner surface being correspondingly outwardly curved, said buckets being also substantially wedgeshaped in form when viewed from above and being so shaped or` curved as to give the greatest possible speed and a power in proportion to the amount of water passing therethrough or the head thereof.
The sides of the back portion of the buckets B are inclined toward the rear end, as shown at b in Fig. 3, and the interior of said buckets is also wedge-shaped in form, as
shown in Fig. 2, and the back wall thereof is curved or concave, as shown at b3, and the rear or discharge end of said buckets is open, as shown at b4, and much wider than the central portion or front end thereof, thus oering the least resistance to the tail-water and providing for a more ready discharge thereof after its eective work has been done.
The sides of each of the buckets B, at the wider or discharge end thereof, are also preferably provided at their inner edges with tr iangular projections b5 and at the narrower or forward end with similar short triangular proj ections bi, and at one side of said buckets the projections b5 and b are countersunk, forming IOO spaces 67, in which are placed tie-plates'bS for securing the buckets together. v In connecting the buckets and in connect:

said buckets may be held in place byfbeing bolted to the wheel W, as shown at G.
y In Fig. 3 We have shown the outer side of shows the inclined sides b at therear or discharge end of saidbuckets, hereinbefore referred to, said buckets being thus made substantially V-shaped in cross-section at their discharge end, as shown at b4, and by reason of this construction the pressure of the water as it is discharged from thebucket acts on the curved back Wall throughout its entire length, and in case of a thin stream or partial head of water a proportionate effect is obtained, and the action on each of the buckets is the same throughout the entire perimeter of the wheel.
By means of the vertically-adjustable disk or plate A the amount of water entering the buckets may be regulated, and by raising said disk or plate until it touches the annular lip R3 on the underside of the water-supply ring R the supply of Water to the buckets maybe entirely cut od and the wheel stopped, as will be readily understood.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A water-Wheel, comprising a central circular portion provided with buckets secured to the perimeter thereof, said buckets being curved and wedge-shaped in form, the inner sides thereof being open, and the discharge end thereof being also open and V-shaped in cross-section, said buckets being also provided at each end with side projections, and
said projectionson one side of said buckets being countersunk, and tie-plates secured in said countersunk portionsfor connecting said buckets, substantially as shown and described. p

, a wheel mounted on the lower end thereof, aportion of the Water-Wheel consisting of three of the'bucket-s B, and this View also the perimeter of which is provided with a plurality of detachable buckets, and a vertically-movable disk or plate mounted on said shaft within said buckets, and provided with rods which pass upwardly through bearings connected with said water-supply, said disk or plate being adapted to operate in connection with said annular flange or rini for regulating the supply of water to said buckets, substantially as shown and described.

In a water-power apparatus, the combination with a circular water-supply ring, provided with an outwardly-directed annular flange or rim, of a shaft passing centrally therethrough, and a wheel on the lower end of said shaft provided at its perimeter with a plurality of. detachable buckets arranged in a circle thereon, and inclosing said annular flange or rim, and a disk or plate mounted on said shaft and provided with rods which pass upwardly through bearings connected with said water-supply ring, said disk or plate being vertically movable, the perimeter of said disk or plate bein g proj ectedbelow said iian'ge or rim, substantially as shown and described.
