PROPELLING AND STEERING APPARATUS. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,010, dated July 4:, 1899.

To to whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISADOR LEHMAN, residing at Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling and Steering Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention, relates to combined propellers and steering apparatus for boats,vessels, and the like, and more especially to such class of inventions wherein the propeller rotates within a non-rotatable cylinder or casing.
My invention consists in securing the nonrotatable cylinder or casin g at the stern of the boat in such a manner that the same may be moved or oscillated in a horizontal direction and at the same time allowing of the free rotation of the propeller therein by connecting said propeller to the shaft of the boat by means of a universal-joint connection.
My invention also consists in other peculiarities of construction,which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I is a view in elevation of a side of a boat, showing my combined propeller and steering apparatus attached. Fig. II is a sectional view illustrating more clearly the details of construction of the universal and slip joint connection between the propeller-shaft and the main shaft of the engine. Fig. III is a plan View illustrating one mannerin which the propeller and steering apparatus may be oscillated or turned horizontally or kept in predetermined position, as desired.
A represents a boat of any suitable construction, to the rear or stern of which is secured a propeller-casing B of suitable diameter to receive a propeller C and allow the same to freely revolve therein. The casing B is preferably provided with a band B, which acts to reinforce the casing B and afford a support for the same. Atthe upper portion of the band B a shaft 19 is.provided,which is secured to said band in any suitable manner and extends upward through the stern of the boat, supporting the casing B and pivoting the same in position.-

The rack E is suitably pivoted or secured to the boat so as to be freely oscillated, thus rotating the pinion D, shaft 19, casing B, and propeller 0. However, as heretofore set forth, the apparatus for oscillating or moving the cylinder B and its contained propeller 0 may be modified and any suitable means employed, such as are well known to the craft.
In order to allow of the free horizontal oscillation of the propeller O and at the same time revolve the same in the desired direction by means of connecting it to the main shaft of the engine F, I have provided a universal joint, which I prefer to construct as illustrated more clearly in Fig. II of the draw.

G represents the shaft upon which the propeller O is mounted, as illustrated in Fig. II,
and by means of which it is directly rotated in either direction. To the inner end of the shaft D is secured a universal-joint connection H, which allows of the bending or'knuckling of said shaft in any and all directions relative to the axis of the same; but inasmuch as the oscillation of the casingB and its contained propeller O about its pivotal point 17 would alter the length of said shaft according to the position it occupied I have provided a slip-coupling J, which is so secured to both or either shafts F or H that while it prevents the slipping of said shaft around the axes of the same and communicates rotary motion from one to the other it will allow of the lengthening of said connection between the main shaft F and the propeller-shaft G, thus rotat ing the propellerO in predetermined direction regardless of the position it may occupy. The universal-joint connection H and the slip-coupling .I may, however, be constructed in any well-known operative manner or form well known, providing they allow of the free oscillation in a horizontal direction of the casing B and its propeller O and at the same time rotate said propeller within said casing.
I have also shown in the drawings, Figs. I and II, a peculiar construction of propeller; but I do not wish to be limited to this construction, inasmuch as it may be modified without departing from my invention, it only being essential that the propeller should be inclosed within a casing, such as B, so as to freely rotate therein, and that said casing B and propeller rotating therein be secured to the stern of the boat in such a manner that the casin g B, with its propeller G, will oscillate horizontally to control the direction of the boat, and while being oscillated will freely rotate to propel the boat.
Other modifications may be made in my invention without departing from the gist of the same.
What I claim is- 1. Acombined propelling and steering apparatus, comprising a casing which is nonrotatable around its horizontal axis, but free to movein a horizontal direction, and means for moving it in said horizontal direction, and a rotating propeller mounted within said casing; said propellerbeing provided with a universal-joint connection whereby the propeller and casing may be moved in a horizontal direction, substantially as set forth.

The combination in a propelling and steering device of the type set forth; of a rotating propeller; a casing within which said propeller is mounted and rotated; universaljoint connection between the driving-shaft of said propeller and the propeller, and means for horizontally directing or turning both casing and propeller, substantially as set forth.
