SAND GUARD.

UNITE STATES ,ATENT O FICE.
CHARLES C. LOWER, OF HIOKSVILLE, OHIO.
SAND-GLlARD SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,649, dated June 27, 1899.
Application filed May 28, 1898. Serial No. 682,049. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. LOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hicksville, in the county of Defiance and State ofv Ohio, have invented a new and usefulSand- Guard, of which the following is aspecification. V
This invention relates to sand bands or guards for vehicle-wheels; and the object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which will effectually prevent dirt from entering the bearing and at the same time automatically discharge any Water, sand, or dirt Which may collect upon the inner end of the hub.
These and other objects and advantages 0 my invention will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehicle hub and axle having my device applied thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the inner end of the hub. Fig. 4c is a detail perspective View of a modified form of hubband. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the guard-sections removed.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an axle of ordinary form, having the usual hub 2 fitted thereon, provided With the common hub-band 3, projecting beyond the end of the hub. Clamped upon the axle? and fitting within the hub-band 3 is my improved sandguard, formed in two-sections 4 and 5. Each of the sections comprises a clamping-band 6, having lugs 7, which are adapted to aline and receive bolts or suitable fastenings 8, whereby the device is clamped tightly upon the axle, and provided with a flaring disk-section or flange 9. Vhen the sections are assembled together, the flanges forma concavo-convex disk around the axle, which fits snugly within the projecting portion of. the hub-band and. over the space between the hub and spindle to exclude all dirt, the. The lower section 5 'is provided, upon its lower convex surface with a pair of'convergent wings or blades 10.
These wings are arranged to be directly beneath the axle and have their lower edges 11 flush with the edge of the disk 9 to fit snugly .Qwithin the interior of the projecting portion of the hub-band and extend to the outer edge thereof, and by reason of their flare or inclination to the surface of the disk 9 they scrape the dirt, water, &c., from the interior of the hub band and automatically discharge same from the hub.
The scraping-blades may be disposed across any portion of the face of the disk; but the preferable disposition thereof is across the face of the lower disk member, so as to discharge the dirt, &;c., beneath the axle, and thereby prevent said dirt from collecting upon the axle, as Would result if the blades were disposed so as to discharge above the axle.
To provide a firm and secure joint for the sections 4 and 5, they are suitably grooved or rabbeted upon their meeting edges, as at 12, fitting one within the other, forming a tight joint to prevent dust, dirt, water, &c., from being forced between the sections and onto the axle.
For the proper Working of my invention it is necessary to have a projecting hub-band, and in case the hub is not so formed I provide a band 13 having a number of spurs or fingers 14 arranged upon its edge, which are adapted to be driven into the end of the hub, as shown in Fig. 2.
- My invention is intended to improve similar devices already in use and provide a more perfect and exceedingly simple sand-guard, being composed of few parts, thereby easily and quickly placed upon the axle for use. The sections of the sand-guard are to be cast separate, having the lugs, the flanges or disksections, and the wings all formed integral, which will produce a very substantial device at a very nominal cost, all of which combine to make my improvements exceedingly practical and useful.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages of my improvements, and
I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction as herein described, and shown in the drawings.
ICO
Having thus described the invention, what Ielaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sand-guard comprising a two-part disk or flange, each disk or flange having an inclined outer face, the combined parts fitting snugly within the hub-band and entirely covering the end of the hub, one of the parts having a scraper, and means for clamping the parts together and upon the axle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A sand-guard comprising a disk or flange fitting within the end of the hub-band, and provided with a pair of scraping-blades, the latter being convergently inclined across the face of the disk or flange, substantially as shown and described.
3. A sand-guard composed of two sections forming clamping-bands, each section being made in a single piece, the meeting edges thereof being rabbeted and fitting one in the other, and provided with a concavo-convex flange or disk-section, one of the flanges or In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
