To all whom t may con/cern.-

Be it known that LPHILLIP WILLIAM COUN- SELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at McClure, in the county of I'Ienry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Gripping Devices for Drivers Use; and I do` declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and usefulinr pi'ovements in devices for use in holding tough-bitted anim als, and especially to a con trivance for holding the reins, without the necessity of the driver having a direct grip upon the reins; and it consists in the provision of a block of wood or other suitable material which is apertured so as to form a handle for the driver, the outline of the block being of such a shape as to tit within a mitten when ing riveted or otherwise secured thereto a clamping mechanism design ed to engage and securely hold the rein.

More specifically the present invention resides in the provision of an apertured block forming a handle through which the hand may be passed, and secured to said block is a plate having an upturned edge recessed to form a hook Whichis adapted to be engaged by a swinging toothed jaw under which the rein is disposed and securely held as the jaw is swung into a locking position.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction and arrangement of parts,as will be hereinafter more fully described and then speciiically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure l is an elevation showing the rein held to the driving-mitten. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the mitten and rein held thereto.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter,A designates the block, which may be made of any suitable outline, but preferably of a shape to readily t within a mitten, as shown. Disposed in the said block is a transverse slot A of sufficient size to admit the lingers of the hand of the driver to pass therethrough. The mitten B when used with the holder is drawn over the latter and a plate D is riveted or otherwise secured to said holder and mitten on the palm side of the mitten. One edge of said plate is turned up at right angles to the plate proper and is recessed away, as seen at D', forming a hook. The'opposite edge of said plate is bent over on the upper face of the plate with a slight spaceintervening,within which space a clamping-jaw E is passed and one end thereof pivoted to the plate, as at c. This pivoted clamp ing-jaw has its two longitudinal edges bent at right angles and provided with serrations E', which are adapted to bite into the rein G to hold the latter securely from slipping. In order to hold the jaw in place, its outer end is caught under the hook, as shown, and the teeth engaging with the rein hold the jaw in it-s engaging relation. When it is desired to release the jaw from the rein, the former is slightly depressed and then swung out, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A device for holding reins, consisting of the apertured block A, the mitten carrying same, the plate D and screws securing the latter and the mitten to said block, the lever E having a serrated edge and pivoted to an edge of said plateD, the opposite edges of the latter being slotted and turned at right angles to the body-portion plate and forming a catch with cam edge to receive and hold the free end of said lever against a rein, as set forth.
