'IO ALI.:l WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM I'I. KELLOGG, of Du Quoin, in the county ot`Perry, and State of Illinois, have 'invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact. description thereof, which Will enable others skilled in the art to make and use thc same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspeoication, in which- Figure =1 is a side View of a closed gate with 'the latch in place.
Figure 2 is a cross-section in the line a: w, tig. 1.
Figure 3 is a face View of the part of the latch in the gate. p
Figure 4 is a face view of the corresponding part in the posit.`
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention Irelates to a device for a self-closing latch to a gate, which will opcn'either Way, and may be opened very readily, being more especially adapted to small gates that are often passed, and require a convenient as Well as a sure fastening.
A A represent the posts of a gate frame, and E B the gate, hung 'by the hinges a a, with a iiat steel spring, I, which twists when the gate is opened, and which closes the gate immediately by resuming its normal position when relieved of pressure. The latch e is a small bar, which is fitted into and passes through the front side of the gate, and is pushed out by a bent springhf, let into t-he gate frame-B: The' front end of the latch c, iig. 3, fits into a correspondingr cavity or socket, e, tig. 4, in the gate post; and fastened to it is a double-incline centre piece, d, iig. 4, which is arranged to strike either face upon one or other of two friction-rollers, g g, let into the corners of the gate post A when the vgate closes; and thus, by the sudden and forcible swing of the gate operated on by the spring b, throws the latch c back and passes over the roller, so that the latch ics into its socket@ by the pressure of the spring For opening thegate I fasten on thc inside of the latch c a double bent lever,
h 7L, which is pivoted to one end of the latch at z'. Inthe knees of the double bent lever h It, are set frictionrollers,-t r, which bear upon ,the frame of the gate when the levers are pressed upon to operi it, and when the gate closes itself and forces the latch back, as will be seen in tig. 2.
IIaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. I claim the gate latcha, in connection with the double bent lever h t, the friction-rollers c k and gg, and the springsj` and b, combined, arranged, and operated substantially ns and for the purposes herein described.
2. I claim also the latch c, in combination with the hat spring b, for swinging and closing a gate, substantially as herein described.
W. H. KELLOGG. Witnesses:
