FOLDING OOOP.
srncIrIcArIoN'forming part of Letters 'Patent No'. 626,109, dated May 3o, 1899.
.application filed February I5, 1899. Serial No. 705,590. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. SUPRUNOW- sKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mode, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Ooops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of poultry coops or crates which are designed to be folded for the purpose of storing and shipment, so as to occupy the smallest amount of room possible. Y
The purpose of the invention is to'prevent the loss or displacement of the parts of the coop and to insure the stability of the structure when unfolded and in condition for service; also, to simplify the general construction, whereby the folding and the setting up of the coop can be readily effected.
Other advantages are contemplated and will appear in the course of the following description, reference being had to the drawings hereto attached, in Which- Figure l is a perspective View of the coop unfolded. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectionA showing the partition folded upon the bottom. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the partition and sides folded and the body partly collapsed. Fig. 4 is a plan section. Fig. 5 is a transverse section. Fig. 6 shows the coop folded.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followingdescription and indicated in the several views of -the drawings by the same reference characters.
The coop is collapsibleand its parts are hinged or pivoted together, so as to prevent loss or displacement. The top 1, ends 2, and bottom 3 are hinged, so as to fold upon one another in parallel relation, as indicated in Figs. 3 and of the drawings. The sides 4 are hinged at their lower edges to the side portions of the bottom 3 and are set in a short distance from the longitudinal edges of the bottom, so as to abut at their ends against the inner edges of cleats 5, applied to the extremities of the ends 2, whereby said sides are prevented from 'outward displacement.
The sides lit snugly between the ends 2 and abut at their extremities against the inner faces thereof, so as to prevent collapsing of the coop when unfolded or set up for use. The nersides 4 are adapted to fold inward and upon the bottom 3 and are provided upon their inner sides at an intermediate point with cleats 6. The partition 7 hinged at its lower edge transversely of the bottom 3, is adapted when unfolded to rest `against the cleats 6 and brace the sides 4 and prevent inward movement thereof. This partition is formed in its top edge with a notch 8, forming a seat for the reception of the movable slat 9 of the top l.
The slat 9 is pivotally connected at one end to an end cleat of-the top l and is movable, so as to admit of ready access to the interior of the coop. Notches l0 are provided at opposite points in the edges of the slat 9 and receive the portions of the partition bordering upon the notch 8, thereby preventing the folding of said partition when the slat is in position, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1. When it is required to collapse or reduce the coop to a knockdown condition, the slat 9 is moved so as to disengage it from the partition 7, after Which the latter is folded upon the bottom 3. The sides 4 being liberated are vfolded inward upon the bottom and partition, thereby permitting the structure to fold as indicated in Fig. 3. The coop is held in a folded position by means of a chain 11, secured to the bottom 3 near one end and adapted to be engaged at its other end with the slat 9. When itis required to set the coop up, the slat 9 is released and the body portion unfolded, after which the partition and the sides are unfolded in the manner Mset forth, thereby bracing the structure and maintaining it in condition for service.'
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A folding coop or like structure having parallel end pieces hinged at their lower edges to the terminals of the bottom, a top parallel with the bottom and hinged at its extremities to the top edges of the end pieces, cleats applied to the extremities of the end pieces and projecting inward therefrom, inwardly-folding parallel side pieces hinged at their lower edges to the bottom and having their ends IOO abutting against the inner sides of the end pieces and against the inner edges of the said terminal cleats, and a partition for preventing inward displacement of the side pieces when the coop is set u p, substantially as described.
2. A folding coop or like structure having parallel end pieces hinged at their lower edges to the terminals of the bottom, a top parallel with the bottom and hinged at its extremities to the top edges of the end pieces, cleats applied to the extremities of the end pieces and projecting inward therefrom, inwardly-foldl ing parallel side pieces hinged at their lower edges to the bottom and having their ends abutting against the inner sides ofthe end pieces and against the inner edges of the terl Josnrn sUrnUNowsiu.
