NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KUHN, OF FRUITVALE, CALIFORNIA.
DOOR-MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,040, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed January 5,1899.
T0 (ti/Z whom it 71mg concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Fruitvale, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Combination Door-Mats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a mat for cleaning the feet. I
It consists, essentially,-in the combination, in a main exterior frame, of compartments, one of which is occupied by interlocked metal plates, the edges of which are presented upwardly to form a preliminary scraping or cleaning device, and the other by a fibrous or other suitable mat-surface having an independent frame and adapted to be removably fixed in the other section, so that the user can pass from one to the other to complete the cleaning of the feet.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a general view of my mat. Fig. 2 shows the manner of securing the removable fibrous mat. Fig. 3 is a view of a large-sized mat.
A is an exterior frame, here shown as rectangular in outline, and it may be made of any desired size to suit the character of Work for which it is to be used. For small households or where but few people pass it may be made to conform in size to such mats as are usually used for such places. If forapublic vestibule orothersimilar place,it maybe made as much larger as required. This frame has a dividing bar or rib O, which may either extend transversely, as here shown, or longitudinally from end to end for large mats, so that the two parts of the mat will lie in the line of travel of passing people. Upon one side of the bar 0 is a grillework ofiron, (shown at D,) which is made in an interlocking pattern of any desired form, as herein shown filling the space between the sides, end, and cross-bar of this section and having the edges upturned so as to stand vertically and serve as scrapers, upon which the feet may be partially cleansed, the loose dirt being rubbed off and falling through the interstices between the plates. Upon the other side of the bar 0 the space is filled with a fibrous or other mat Serial No. 701,230.. N0 modelJ for further and moreperfect cleansing of the suitable or well-known material, as shown at D, and I have shown it as fixed into an elastic metal frame E, which is adapted to fit within the space included by the sides and end A and bar 0 of that compartment.
In order to remove and secure this'mat, so that it can be taken out for cleaning and for other purposes, I have shown pins F project ing from the bar 0 and corresponding holes or indentations made in the peripheral metallic binding of the mat, so that this end may be held by simply engaging the pins and holes. The other end is then pressed down within the sides A, the elasticity of the metallic border being sufficient to allow it to fit snugly within the frame A, and indentations G are made in one part and corresponding projections G on the other, so that when pressed into place they act as spring-latches to hold it and prevent its being removed under ordi nary conditions. When it is desired to remove it, it is only necessary to compress the elastic border sufficiently to disengage the do pressions and protuberances and lift this end out of the frame, when the other end will be disengaged from the holding-pins and it can be removed.
The construction provides a cheap, convenient, and easily-cleaned mat of great durability.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist 1. A mat comprising a main exteriorframe with subdividing bar extending across it, a section of iron lattice-work with upturned edges secured in one half of the frame and a fibrous mat secured in the other half and having a containing-frame sprung into engage= ment therewith.
2. A door-mat consisting of a circumscribing metallic frame havinga transverse dividing-bar, a metallic cleansing-surface fixed in one half the space consisting of a lattice of iron strips having upturned edges as shown, a fibrous mat having an elastic metallic border secured thereto'and meansforremovably fixing said mat and its border into the other fitting Within the remaining half of the main [0 section of the main frame. frame and pins and spring-catches by which 3. A door-mat consisting of a main periphsaid mat is removably secured in place. eral frame having a transverse subdividing- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 5 bar, a cleaning-surface formed of a latticehand.
work of metallic strips with upturned edges CHARLES KUHN. fixed in one half of the main frame, a fibrous WVitnesses: mat having a surrounding elastic metallic S. H. NOURSE,
border within which itis secured, said border H. F. ASCHECK.
