WATER-TROUGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,208, dated April 18, 1899. Application filed April 8, 1898. Serial No. 676,886, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. FOLTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at I'Iagerstown, in the county of \Vashington and State of l\laryland,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVater-Troughs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to water-troughs,and more especially to a class oftroughs designed for watering live stock and for similar purposes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an efficient head for troughs of the character referred to so constructed as to adapt the parts to be easily and quickly secured together so as to insure a water-tight joint and also to adapt such heads to be adj usted from time to time if need be, as in case of shrinkage or working loose, so as to prevent leakage and render the trough watertight under varying conditions or changes of temperature.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and then pointed outin the claimsv at the end of the description.
In the drawings, in which similar letters of reference are used to denote similar parts in different views, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a water-troughembodying myinvention. Fig. 2 illustrates a fragmentary side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of one end of the trough; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View, on a slightly-enlarged scale, of a portion of the trough, illustrating the means for securing the end pieces or head to the bodyportion or trough proper.
In the drawings the letter A denotes the main or body portion of the trough,'which may consist of a concave or semicircular plate of sheet metal or other suitable material,which may be bent, rolled, or otherwise formed into the desired shape and to which is attached at each end a head or end piece B, as shown. The heads or end pieces B may be formed of cast metal or other suitable material and are each provided on their inner sides with a groove or recess b, corresponding in shape to the contour of the end of the trough proper, A, the said groove or recess being preferably formed with inclined walls converging inwardly, as shown, and the end of the trough being of a blunter contour than the shape of the groove or recess to adapt said end to be wedged into the recess, and thereby form a secure water-tight joint. By thusinclining or beveling the Walls of the recess or groove the head of the trough is adapted to be fitted over the end of troughs of different thicknesses and may be wedged into the recesses of the heads more or less tightly and secured therein by means of bolts 0 C, which in the form shown are provided with lugs c, which pass through apertures in the sides of the trough A and are riveted thereto. The bolts 0 preferably have screw-threaded ends 0, which project through openings in the heads B or apertured ears I) thereof, and by means of nuts 0 screwed thereon, the heads and trough are firmly secured together and the endsof the trough are wedged into the grooves or recesses, so as to form water-tight joints. If desired, suitable packing may be inserted in said grooves; but such packing is not necessary, because the parts are adapted to make a tight tit, and in case the joints become loose by shrinkage or otherwise in continuous use the same may be made water-tight by screwing up the nuts on the ends of the bolts C. The heads or end pieces B are preferably provided with'pendent legs or extensions 19 to form supports for the trough. By forming the ears I) of the heads through which the ends of the bolts 0 pass of a thickness less than the thickness of the body of the said head the ends of the bolts 0 and the nuts thereon will not project beyond the outer side or face of the said head, thus avoiding unsightly projections, which are liable to be struck and broken or injured so as to cause leakage of the trough.
WVhile I have shown the bolts 0 as being riveted to the trough proper, it is obvious that they may be secured thereto in other ways, and while I preferably form the body of the trough of a substantially semicircular shape from a single piece of sheet metal bent or rolled into the desired shape the said trough may be constructed of two or more pieces, if
desired, with water-tight joints Without departing from the spirit of my invention,which resides, essentially, in the novel and peculiar construction of the detachable head or end piece and the means for attaching the same to the trough, so as to adapt it to be easily applied and adjusted from time to time to take up wear or cause a more tight fit and prevent leakage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A water-trough comprising a trough-like body, end pieces or heads having perforated lugs or ears on their edges and grooves on their inner faces corresponding with the contour of the ends of said body; said grooves having inclined walls which converge inwardly, and said ends having a blunter contour than the shape of the grooves, to adapt them to be inserted in said grooves with a wedging action, and said lugs being of less thickness than the main portion of the head; bolts extending from the end portions of said body through said perforated lugs,and nuts screwed on said bolts having their outer faces substantially flush with the outer surface of said head, whereby said trough-like body and heads are firmly secured together so as to form water-tight joints with provision for adjusting the same to keep the joints tight, substantially as described.
- 2. In a water-trough, head-pieces each havin g on its inner face a groove or recess corresponding in shape with the form of the end of the trough to be inserted therein, the walls of said recess converging inward to adapt the end of the trough fitting therein to be wedged into position so as to form and maintain a watertight joint, in combination with a trough-like body having its ends seated in said grooves; said ends being of a blunter contour than the shape of the grooves, and said body having secured thereto screw-threaded bolts whose freeends extend through apertures in the edges of said heads, and nuts on the free ends of said bolts for wedging the ends of the body in said grooves, substantially as described.
3. Awater-trough comprisingasemicircular body having a series of bolts secured thereto and extending beyond the ends thereof,heads having semicircular grooves or recesses on their inner faces, the walls of which grooves converge inwardly, so as to adapt the ends of said body which are of a blunter contour than the shape of the grooves to be wedged into the grooves, a series of perforated lugs or cars on the edges ofsaid heads of less thickness than the main portion of the head, and nuts screwed on said bolts with their outer faces substantially flush with the outer surface of the heads when the parts are joined together, substantially as and for the purpose described. 7

A water-trough comprising a semicircular body having a series of bolts secured thereto and extending beyond the ends thereof,heads having semicircular grooves or recesses on their inner faces, the walls of which converge inwardly to adapt the ends of said body which are of a blunter contour than the shape of the grooves to be wedged into the grooves, a series of perforated lugs or ears on the edges of said heads of less thickness than the main portion of the head, and nuts screwed on said bolts with their outer faces substantially flush with the outer surface of the heads when the parts are joined together; said end pieces. or heads being provided with pendent extensions or legs to form supports for the trough, substantially as described.
