Beit known that I, ISAAC BANISTER, of the city of Newer-k, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a. new and'iinproved Claspto tak-e the -place of strings, buttons, or other fast-enings4 for shoes,` gaiters, or other articles of dress or clothing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fnll and lexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon. The nature of my improvement consists in yso forming two plates or narrow strips of flexible metal that they forni a clasp, as represented in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 represents the clasp'open. A is the upper or face plate; B is the under or back plate; C is the hinge connecting the Vtwo plates, formed by perforating the plate B at C and inserting the plate A, made narrow to t the hole in B, and bent up to form the hinge C; E lE E are holes made in the under plate B to fasten it.

' Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section of the clasp closed. The under plate B is bcnt up and over towaril i the hinge to form a catch at D, the end of B rounded and concave from beneath, and A 'bent up to t in the cavity, as at D. To open the clasp requires a side pressure of A et D.

What I claim, and desire to secure, is l A clasp, when formed substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
