WILLIAM A. PRATT, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DEVICE FOR TURNING NIPPLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 620,251, dated February 28, 1899.
Application filed March 25, 1897. Serial No. 629,119. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PRATT, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Turning Nipples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for turning nipples; and the object of the same is to provide a device whereby nipples may be turned for the purpose of washing the same thoroughly to remove all dirt which may adhere thereto.
After nipples have been used for any length of time the inner surface of the same becomes clogged up with dirt which adheres thereto and is very difficult to remove without turning the nipple. I have provided a very simple but effective device for quickly turning the nipple, the same being specifically set forth and claimed in the specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the same, showing the nipple positioned thereon preparatory to turning the same. Fig. 3 is a View illustrating the position of the parts after the nipple has been turned.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a plate having secured on one end thereof a stationary arm 2. The opposite end of this plate is slotted, and pivoted therein is a movable arm 3. These arms have their upper extremities turned downward to form hooks 4 and their lower extremities bent backward to form the rings 5. A spring 6 is secured at one end to the under side of the plate or head 1 and at its extremity bears against the movable arm, the same serving normally to hold the arms separated at their lower ends.
The head 1 is perforated centrally, as at 7, and adapted to extend through this perforation is the rod 8, which is provided with a head 9 upon its upper end and a stop 10 intermediate its ends, which latter serves to limit the movement of the rod through the head or plate 1.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The upper ends of the arms are forced together by spreading the fingers of the hand apart, and the neck portion or open end of the nipple is placed thereon. The lower ends of the arms are then approximated, which serves to spread apart their upper ends and stretch or expand the neck portion of the nipple. The rod 8 is then moved through the head or plate 1, its head 9 engaging the lower end of the nipple, and a continued upward movement of the rod forces that end of the nipple through the expanded neck portion of the same and accomplishes the turning therev of. The thumb and fingers of the operator engage the lower ends of the arms, and the device is operated in a manner similar to the operation of a pair of scissors.
From the above description it will be seen that I have produced a device by means of which nipples may be quickly and readily turned to insure a perfect cleansing of the inner surface thereof, whereby sickness caused by the imperfect cleansing of the same will be avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for turning nipples, consisting of arms adapted to receive the nipple and expand a portion of the same, and means on said device and between said arms for forcing the remainder of the nipple through the expanded portion.
2. A device for turning nipples, consisting of a pair of arms pivotally mounted with respect to each other and formed with inturned or hooked upper ends adapted to engage the neck of the nipple and to stretch the same when said arms are separated, and means on said device and between said arms for forcing the remainder of the nipple through the expanded portion.
3. A device for turning nipples, comprising stretching arms having nipple engaging means thereon, and a slidingly-mounted rod for forcing the unexpanded portion of the nipple through that which had been expanded.
4.. A device for turning nipples, consisting of a plate, a stationary arm carried thereby having a hooked end, a movable arm pivoted thereto also having a hooked end, the hooked ends of said arms adapted to engage the nipple for stretching the same when said arms are separated, and a loosely-mounted rod in said plate for engaging and forcing the remainder of the nipple through the expanded portion thereof.
5. A device for turning nipples, comprising a plate, a stationary arm secured thereto, a movable arm pivoted therein,a spring secu red to the plate at one end and hearing at its opposite end against said movable arm to hold the lower ends of said arms normally separated, said arms-adapted to engage the nipple at their upper ends and to expand the same when their lower ends are drawn together, and means on said plate for moving the remainder of the nipple through the expanded portion thereof.
6. A device for turning nipples comprising a plate, arms secured therein and adapted to engage the nipple at their upper ends, whereby when the lower ends of the arms are approximated the upper ends are separated and the portion of the nipple engaged thereby expanded, a rod movable through the plate, and a head upon the upper end of said rod for engaging the nipple, whereby when the rod is moved upward the portion of the nipple engaged thereby is forced through the expanded portion thereof substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM A PRATT.
