Be it known that I, GEORGE O. PRINCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Oombined Pad-Holder and Pad Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful to improvement in combined pad-holders and copy-supporters and pads therefor, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device upon which a number of sheets of paper in pad form may be placed I 5 and notes or other writing inscribed thereon leaf by leaf, each successive leaf being turned rearward out of the way; and a further object of my invention is to provide a copy-holder which may be placed beside a type-writing machine and conveniently expose to view the notes or other writing for transcribing upon said machine, and still a further object of my invention is to provide a pad of paper especially adapted for use in connection with 2 '5 my improved holder and support and so arranged that it may be quickly placed upon said support or removed therefrom.

With these ends in View this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the con- 3 5 struction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in

Figure 1 is a perspective of my improvement in position for writing thereon; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of the device when adjusted and utilized as a copy-holder; Fig. 3, a cross-section at the line m a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: a perspective of apad so formed as to be especially adapted for use upon this holder.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied I provide a base-board A, of some suitable material, such as pasteboard bound with cloth, which should be of sufficient thickness to form a rigid support and holder, and

I secure to the rear side thereof a backingboard, consisting of a rigid section B, of similar material, to which is hinged or flexibly connected in any convenient manner the swinging section 0, the latter being connected by a flexible strap D to the back in such manner that it may be free to swing in and against the back of the base-board, as shown in Fig.

1, or swung outwardly to the position shown. in Fig. 2, when it will act as a leg and hold the supporter in position after the manner of an easel. Secured to the back and project ing upward therefrom are two socketed securing-posts E,preferably in the form of tubes having flanges at the lower ends, which are confined and held between the back of the base-board and the rigid section of the backing-board, saidposts being of sufficient length to pass through a pad of convenient thickness, and in practice apad Fis placed thereon, which is facilitated by the holes G having previously been formed therein, as will be readily understood. Now in order that this pad may not become displaced or removed from the. tube retaining-arms H, having extensions on the yoke-wire I in such manner that their forward ends will project into said tubes, as clearly shown, while they afford loops upon which each sheet of paper may be run backward and out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2. This yoke is detachably secured to the back by means of the turn-button J, which is pivoted within the back and adapted to turn over the horizontal member K of the yoke and secure and hold the same in place in connection with the ends of the arms, which project within the tubes. From this it will be seen that the holder may be laid flat, as shown in Fig. 1, and the notes or other writo ing inscribed thereon,the sheets being turned,

as desired, over the retaining-arms, so as to expose new surfaces to view, and after such notes have been inscribed and it is desired to transcribe the same upon a type-writing ma- 5 chine or otherwise the device may be adjusted to form a copy-holder by adjusting the swinging section 0 to the position shown in Fig. 2, after which the notes thereon may be readily observed, as the sheets upon which I00 they are inscribed will stand at the proper angle to the eye of the operator to be readily observed. Should it be found desirable to utilize a guide or marker, this may be provided by securing the parallel rod L to one side of the base-board, one end of said rod being bent and held between the back of the base-board and the rigid section B of the backing-board, to which rod is pivotally attached the straight-edge M, as indicated at N, in such manner that said straight-edge may be held upon said rod by the exertion of a reasonable amount of force, it being preferable that sufficient friction should exist between this connection to prevent the straight-edge from moving by its own Weight or by accident, and also permitting the straight-edge to be swung across the face of the pad or away from the latter and remain in whatever position adjusted. By this arrangement the notes inscribed upon the surface of the pad may be indicated line by line by the proper adjustment of the marker and also the leaves of the pad held against displacement by said marker, and yet when it is desired to turn one or more of the same the marker may be swung away from the surface thereof and this result accomplished as readily as if there were no marker.

By providing the securing posts with flanges held between the base-board and rigid back section projecting fastenings on the back of the holder are avoided, and a similar desirable result is derived by securing the bentend of the supportingrod of the guide or marker between said parts of the holder.

For use in connection with a device of the character described it is advantageous to provide paper in pad form and so arranged that it may be readily applied to the tubes E or removed therefrom, and this I accomplish by taking a given number of sheets of paper and arranging them in pad form, as shown in Fig. 4, and forming therethrough the holes G and then passing through these holes the tapes or cords O and tying the same, as clearly shown, so that when a new pad is to be placed upon the holder the retaining-arms are removed from the back by the proper manipulation of the turn-button J, the holes G passed over the tubes E, and the retaining-arms again inserted within said tubes and secured by the readjustment of the turn-button J. After this has been accomplished it is only necessary to cut or untie the cords 0, when the device will'be ready for use.

Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and useful is As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed copy-holder consisting of a baseboard, a backing-board comprising a rigid section extending across and secured to the base-board at the head thereof, a hinged section adapted to act as a brace to hold the base-board in an inclined position, the outer faces of both of said sections lying in the same plane when the hinged section is closed against the base-board, a socketed post-retainer having a flange at the lower end confined be tween the rigid section and the back of the baseboard, a wire retainer secured to the baseboard at the head and having a bent extension detachably engaging the socket of the post, a rod extending alongside of the baseboard and having bent portion confined between the rigid section and the back of the base-board, whereby the flange on the post and the bent portion of the rod are covered by the back section, with a guide or marker movably mounted upon said rod, substantially as described.
