GEORGE C. METCALF, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,891, dated February 7, 1899.
Application filed June 1l, 1898. Serial No. 683,169. (No model.)
To all whom imag concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE C. METCALF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents a front view of my improved stay-clamp; Fig. Il, a side view of the same; Fig. III, a perspective view of the same, and Fig. IV represents a front elevation of a section of the completed fence.
My improved stay-clamps A are provided with the stay-openings a, in which the usual vertical stays are inserted. The clamp consists of a straight malleable-metal trough b, having two sides b and b2. The one side b2 is formed on its outer face with a lug b3, the stay-openings CL being formed at right angles to the trough and of a size sufficient to snugly receive the size of wire from which the stays are constructed. The stays having been prepared of a proper length, the stay-clamps are slipped upon and disposed along them at proper distances from each other, leach clamp being fastened in place by striking and indenting the back of the lug, whereby said lug is caused to bind upon the stay.
ing the stringere to each stay and securing said stringers against longitudinal displacement.
For further detail construction of the remaining portion of the fence reference is hereby made to my pending application, Serial No. 677,979.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means covered by any one of the following claims be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and dise tinctly claim as my invention- 1. In a wire fence, a stay-clamp consisting of the combination with a horizontally-disposed trough adapted to receive a strin ger and having a devious horizontal cross-section, of means adapted to fasten said trough to astay, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wire fence, a stay-clamp consisting ofthe combination with a trough adapted to receive a Stringer and having a devious horizontal cross-section, one side of said trough adapted to be bent over said Stringer, and means adapted to fasten said trough to a stay, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 8th day of June, l898.
GEORGE C. METCALF.
