W. McCALL.
SLIDABLE HINGED WINDOW. (Application sied Nov. 4, 189e.)
THE NDRRIS PETER! C0., PHOTO-HTMC.. WASHINDTON. D. C.
UNITED Sii/iras VILLIAM MCCALL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCCALLS SLIDING HINGE WINDOIV COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SLIDABLEHINGED WINDOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,608, dated January 31, 1899.
Application filed November 4, 1898. Serial No. 695,1183. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM MCGALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Slidable Hinged Vindows; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in 1o windows, and is applicable in part to ordinary windows having slidable sashes, but is especially adapted for use upon that class of windows in which the sashes are hinged upon one side to a strip which is slidable on vertical guides, by which guides the slidable strip is retained in position when the sash is opened.
My invention consists in the parts and the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is a horizontal section through the two sashes. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the parting-strip.
A is the window-frame.
B B are the vertically-slidable sashes, which z 5 are hinged at one edge to slides C 4and are closable at the opposite edge against similar slides, so that when closed the sashes and slides may move up and down as a single structure.
When the sashes are to be opened about theirhinged joints, it is necessary to provide a means for preventing the slides C from being pulled out from their channels by the weight of the sash. This is effected by plates 3 5 D, secured to the vertical edges of the slides by screws E or other equivalent means. In
order to form guides within which these plates are retained, flanged strips of metal F are secured beneath the stops upon the outer and inner sides of the sashes, with the anges pro-V jecting over the outer edges of the plates D.
The parting-strip Gis rolled of sheet metal, so as to form a light hollow strip extending the full height of the window between the sashes. This strip is rolled with the outwardly-turned han ges H upon each edge, these flanges being similar to those of the outer flanged plates F and correspondingly projecting over the inner edges of the plates D, which are fixed to the slides C. The parting-strip is secured to the frame by screws, as at I, and forms a neatindestructible attachment which allows the face of the frame to be made in a single piece without the usual groove or channel between two strips, which is ordinarily made to receive the wooden parting-strip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hollowmetallic parting-strip for Windows, having outwardly-turned edge flanges, similar hanged plates secured to the fram-e exterior to the line of travel of the sashes and plates fixed to the edges of slides to which the sashes are hinged, the edges of said plates traveling beneath and being guided by the hanged plates and parting-strip.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM MCCALL.
