Be it known that 1, AMMON S. SEcHnIsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Verdilla, in the county of Snyder and State of Pennsylvania,have invented a new and useful Condiment-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of casters or condiment-holders, particularly for salt and pepper, which are designed to contain both salt and pepper in separate compartments and capable of delivering either salt or pepper, as desired.

The objects of the present invention are to provide a slide adapted to open and close the sets of openings or perforations in the top or cap of the caster with operatin g thumb-pieces and means forlocking the slide when both sets of openings are closed.

These and further objects and advantages of my improvements will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure lis a vertical longitudinal sectional View of a cruet provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cap with the slide closing the pepper-openings. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the cap, taken at right angles to that -of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the slide.

Corresponding part-s in the several iigures are denoted by like characters of reference.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the cruet, of any preferred shape and material, having an eXteriorly-threaded neck 2, whereby the cap 3 is removably secured thereon. The interior of the cruet is divided into two compartments 4 and 5 by means of a longitudinal partition 6, and the salt and pepper are contained in either compartment entirely separated from each other. The cap is preferably of metal, having the inner side of its depending tlan ge threaded and adapted to engage the threaded neck of the caster in the usual manner. The openings or perforations for distributing the salt and pepper are provided in the top of the cap and are arranged at each side ot the partition 6, preferably in two parallel lines 7 and 8, as shown.

Arranged against the inner face of the cap is a slide 9, the body of which is preferably of circular form, but smaller than the cap, so as to be moved from side to s'ide therein. The slide is provided with a straight slot 10, eX- tendiug di ametrically across the center thereof and parallel with the two sets of perforations in the cap. At diametrically opposite points on the periphery of the slide are provided thumb-pieces 1l, disposed transversely with respect`to the perforations 7 and 8 and extending through openings 12, respectively, in the upper edge of the cap. A suitable fillingpiece 13 is placed in the cap and against the slide to retain the same therein and yet allow the required movement thereof. This fillingpiece is adapted to iit tightly against the top of the partition 6 to prevent mixing of the contents of the separate compartments and is provided with a pair of openings 14 and 15 directly over the compartments and alining with the sets of perforations in the cap. By this arrangement the slide is disposed between the top of the cap and the iillingpiece 13, so as to open either set of perforations and close the other to discharge either the salt or pepper separately. By reason of the thumb-pieces extending at diametrically opposite points of the cap they may be grasped between the thumb and foreinger and pushed in either direction to close one or the other set of perforations.

By referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be noted that the circular body of the slide contacts with the side of the cap and forms a stop, limiting the movement of the slide in either direction and insures the proper alining of the slot of the slide with the openings of the caps and the iilling.

XVhen the cruet is not in use, the slide remains in an intermediate position, with its slot 10 disposed between the set of perforations and the openings 1i and 15 in the illing-piece, as in Fig. 1, and thus closing each compartment and prevent-ing spilling of the contents thereof by accidentally upsetting the cruet. I hen in this normal position,the slide is held against accidental displacement by means of raised spurs 16, provided opposite the ends of the slot 1Q, and similar spurs 17 on the thumb-pieces 1l. The spurs 16 are adapted to engage notches or recesses 18 in the top of the cap, and the spurs 17 with the upper edges of the openings 12, whereby the ICO slide is conveniently and effectively held against accidental displacement, and thereby prevents spilling of the contents of the cruet.

To guard against confusion as to which com partment contains pepper and which salt, I prefer to inscribe Pepper77 and Salt,re spectively, next each set of perforations.

It will be observed that the filling-piece 13, fitting closely the top of the partition 6 and provided with the contracted openings 14 and 15, feeds the contents of the caster directly to the perforations 7 and 8 without coming in contact with and collecting between the slide and the cap, and the slide cuts oif the supply quickly and effectively, as will be understood.

Changesin theform, proportion, and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit and scope or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention, and therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement as herein set forth.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a condiment-holder, the combination with a cap provided with perforations and recesses in its top and slots at diametrically opposite sides thereof, of a slide having thumbpieces provided at diametrically opposite sides, spurs formed upon the thumb-pieces and the body of the slide, and also a trans- Verse opening formed therein, the slide being mounted below the cap with its thumb-pieces extending through the slots thereof and adapted to open and close the perforations of the cap, the spurs upon the body of the slide and upon the thumb-pieces being adapted to engage respectively with the recesses in the cap and the edges of the slots therein,whereby the slide may be held against accidental displacement, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a condiment-holder, the combination with a cap provided with two separate sets of perforations, recesses formed between the sets of perforations in its top, and slots at diametrically opposite sides thereof, of a slide comprising a body and oppositely-extending thumb-pieces, the body of the slide having a slot formed centrally therein, and spurs disposed at each end of the slot, the lslide being mounted beneath the top of the cap with the thumb-pieces extending through the respective slots thereof, and the spurs engaging with the recesses of the cap, whereby the slide is normally held with its slot between the sets of perfor-ations and thus closing the condiment-holder, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a condiment-holder, the combination with a cap having separate sets of perforations formed in its top, and diametrically opposite slots formed in the sides thereof, of a slide having a pair of spaced spurs, and a slot formed intermediate the ends thereof, the slide being mounted beneath the top of the cap and extending at each end through the slots formed therein, with the spurs normally engaging the opposite sides of the cap and holding the slide with its slot disposed between the sets of perforations and thereby closing the condiment-holder, substantially as shown and described.
