SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,949, dated January 3, 1899. Application filed September 25, 1896. Serial No. 606,963. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PORTER MARSHALL, a
, citizen of the United States, residing at Fair Play, in the county of Polk and State of Mis- Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners of that class in which the fastener is fitted to the 'jamb of the Window frame or casing in operative relation to the sash which it is desired shall be sustained in either of several positions within the win- (low-frame.
The object that I have in view is to provide an improved sash-fastener in which the locking parts are housed or concealed wholly within the jamb and the sash, so that access may not be obtained thereto by evil-disposed persons.
In my invention the fastener isoperated solely by the vertical movement of the sash with which the fastener is combined, and to provide for throwing the fastener out of looking relation to the sash the former is constructed to be acted on by the sash to force it back within its recess in the frame-jainb by a slight lifting movement of the sash itself. have locking engagement with the sash for the purpose of holding the latter securely and steadily in either of its raised positions within the casing or frame.
To these ends the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a window-frame and its sashes, illustrating my improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional elevation through a part of the frame-jamb, showing my improved fastener fitted thereto and illustrating a part of the sash by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an edge view of one of the sashes, illustrating the perforated face-plate applied to the sash and adapted to The fastener is also constructed to be used in connection with my improved fastener. 1
Like letters of reference denote like and corresponding parts in each figure of the drawings.
A designates an ordinary frame or casing of a window, and B is a recess formed in one.
of the jambs of said frame or casing. Ihis recess may be lined by a metallic casing, as shown by Fig. 2; but this is not essential to my invention. The edge of the sash-stile adjacent to the recess in the casing-jamb is provided with a plurality or series of notches or recesses spaced vertically at suitable distances from each other, and to this edge of the sash-stile is rigidly secured in any suitable manner a metallic face-plate E, which is adapted to ride against the face of the jamb opposed thereto. This face-plate constitutes a wearplate to take the wear from the sash-stile incident to the stile riding against the jamb of the window-casing, and in said metallic face-plate is formeda series of slots or openings 6, which are coincident with the notches in the stile of the sash.
My improvement resides in the peculiar formation of an automatic locking-dog G. This locking-dog consists of a single piece of metal having a narrow elongated shank, which is tapered or flared from its pivoted end toward its free end, thus providing at the free end of the dog a surplusage of metal, which overbalances the dog and causes its free end to project or extend normally outward and beyond the vertical face of the frame-jamb. The outer edge of the enlarged head formed by the tapering dog has an inclination or curvature forming a bearing-surface in the path of the perforated metallic wear-plate, and this bearing-surface forms one of the essential features of my improved fastener, because the wear-plate is adapted to ride against said edge of the dog for the purpose of throwing the latter backwardly into its recess B when the sash is lifted quickly, thereby effecting the automatic disengagement of the fastener from the sash to permit the latter to be raised or lowered within the casing or frame A.
The head of my improved locking-dog G is furthermore provided with a beveled or inclined face F, which extends at an angle from the curved or inclined bearing edge just described, and this inclined or beveled face F meets or joins a shoulder 0 provided in the enlarged head of the locking-dog, such shoulder and the inclined edge F forming a notch at the free end and on the upper edge of the headed dog and above the inclined or curved bearing edge of said dog.
The locking-dog G has its shank pivoted within a boxing or casing fitted in the recess B by means of a transverse pivot pin or screw D, and said locking-dog is thus arranged within the casing to have its weighted enlarged upper end normally projected beyond the vertical face of the jamb in which the dog is mounted. The casing or boxing in which the locking-dog is housed is open at its side near the sash-stile, as shown by Fig. 2, and the outward movement of the gravity locking-dog is limited by means of a stop-pin H, which is fixed in the recess B above the pivot D and below the enlarged protruding end or head of the locking-dog.
In the practical service of my improved sash-fastener the locking-dog has its headed and notched end extended into one of the openings e and a recess of the sash, and the notch of said dog fits against the upper edge formed by one of the openings e in the metallic face-plate E. Under normal conditions the sash is free to be lifted, and during the raising movement of the sash the lower edge of the opening 6 in the face-plate E bears against the inclined or curved bearing edge of the lockingdog, thus impelling the latter inwardly into its recess Bin the jamb. Then the sash has been raised the desired distance and one of the notches and openings e arrive opposite to the notched headed end of the gravity-dog, the latter drops automatically into engagement with the sash, because the notch of the dog fits against the upper edge of the opening 2 in the metallic wear-plate. To
lower the sash, it is necessaryto lift the same quickly for a short distance and thereby bring the lower edge of one opening 6 against the beveled or curved bearing edge of the automatic dog sufficiently to force the latter inwardly into its recess, after which the sash should be lowered quickly to prevent the notched end of the dog from having engagement with the apertured face-plate E.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be observed that I have provided an improved fastener which is wholly automatic in its operation, and that the disengagement of the lock ing-dog from the fastener is effected by proper adjustment of the sash itself. The described construction wholly obviates the provision of means for the manual adjustment of the locking-dog, and said dog is wholly housed or concealed within the jamb of the window-casing and the vertical stile of the sash, so that access cannot be obtained thereto for throwing it out of engagement with the sash.
My improvement is distinguished from prior sash-fasteners of that class which are seated in the jamb of the window-casing by reason of the fact that the fastener is wholly automatic in its operation, whereas prior fasteners have been provided with means for manually adjusting the same into and out of engagement with the sash.
Having thus described myinvention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the class described, the combination with a window-frame, and a sash provided with notches, of aninclined gravitydog pivoted at its lower end to the windowframe and having its upper end enlarged and arranged to engage the notches of the sash, said dog being provided at its enlarged end with the inclined face F, and having a curved riding edge below the latter, and provided, above the inclined face F, with a notch forming a shoulder adapted to support the sash, said inclined face F and riding edge enabling the dog to be operated solely by the movements of the sash, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PORTER MARSHALL.
