O. M. MA C.K, OF BROOKLYN, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters .Patent No. 61,673, dated January 29, 1867.
Inrnovnn WASHING MACHINE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, C. M. MACK, of Brooklyn, inthe county of Susquehanna, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in rushing Machines; annd I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to vmake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichl Figure l is a vertical section of my'improved washing machine, taken in the plane ofY the line .'L x, fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view of the inside of tlieanachinc.
Similar letters of reference indicate like 'pai-ts,
.This invention relatos to an improvement in Awashing machines, and consists in the arrangement of a horizontal rack-frame, fitted 'to move up and down vertically within a box, with the contraction and expansion of springs, on which the frame rests; the bottom of said frame being formedof a series of open' slats, upon which the clothes tobe washed are placed, when anotlfer rack-frame orfollower, formed also of open slats, is forced down upon the clothes by -a lever to which it is attached, squeezing the clothes evenly between the slat racks of the two fra-mes, alternately raising-them in the air and plunging them in the suds by the action of the springs under the lower frame, and thus eifectually cleansing them with but little labor by operating upon the principle of compression and repeated immersion, which avoids the excessive friction and consequent wear and tear of the fabric caused in ordiiiary washing machines working upon the principle of rubbing.
A is a square wooden box, standing on'l suitable legs, a ft, and provided'with a faucet, b, at the bottom. Within the box.A-is nicely fitted to move freely a square frame, c, deep enough to holdsI parcel 'of clothes to be washed, and'resting on spiral springs, dd, in each corner of the bo'x A, so that when thcsprings are expanded the bottom of the frame c shall be so far above the bottom of the box A as to admit of several pails of water being put in the box under the frame. llhebottom of the frame'c is a rack of open slats, ewa, running across, l a little way only apart. Avfollower or -rack-frame, g, is fitted to move up and down freely within the frame 0,
in `which are corresponding slats, e a', which lie directly over the sla-ts e e in the frame @.when 'the two frames are together, as shown in g. 2. The follower g is suspended by two opposite side a-rms, L h, to a hand-lever frame, z' z', which is hung upon uprights, 7c 7c, placed on the upper part of the box' A; and the arrangement is such that, by lowering the lever-frame z' z', the follower g will bealr upon the frame v0,. and push it down upon the springs cl d, and compress them and, by raising the leverf'frame z' z', the follower gwill allo'w the frame c to rise.
by the expansion of the springs (l d.' V The follower g may also beflifted entirelylout of the box A by elevating the lever-frame 7,' 2', and throwing it over to the opposite-side 'of the box, in order to place a lot of clothes within the frame c to be washed, by operating the lever-franein the manner' just described, l
For washing, sutlicent suds are put in the box A to leave' an air space of an inch or two below -the rackframe c. The clothes are then placed within the frame c and the follower g pressed down upon them with the lever-frame z' z', the repeated movement of which, up and downsqueezes the clothes between the raek-frame and the follower,-and presses' them down into the suds .in such manner that theksuds and air are forced through the.
texture of the fabric, and the dirt is entirely expelled therefrom. i
`Having described my invention, Ifclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent-7 v The rack-frame cfplaced on the springs al d in the box A, in combination with'the follower g, operated by the lever-frame z' arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein described. o. M. MACK.
