TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONGERN:
Be it known. that H. P. BALL and A. L. GRAVES, of Albany, in the county of Albany, and in the State of New York, havel invented a new and useful improvement' in Shears;. and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing-s, and to 'the letters of reference marked thereon.
' Inthe annexed drawings, making ,part of this specification, A A. represent the handles of the shears, pivoted together at g, with the jaws BBformed-ou their forward ends. These handlesv with jaws formed upon them are made of malleable iron, or any other suitable material. The inner faces of the jaws B B are provided with recesses, into which are fitted the steel blades or knives C C, These kniveshave cutting edges, and are pivoted to the jaws B Blnear their forward ends by means of screws lat e e. The heels of-these knives are stationed at any desired point, or moved by means of set-screws d CZ which act against their back edges. The inner ends of the knives C C are bevelled, as seen, from a to x, so 'that when a' screw is inserted in the jaw, 'as seen ,at a,
the under side of the screw-head will fit the bevel of the knife. The screws a a are for the purpose of station?.
blades C C may be adjusted upon the'jaws as fast as said blades wear away on their cutting edges by use. To
ing the knives or blades at their rear ends. It will readily be seen that by this arrangement and construction the 4change or adjust the blade, the screws a a are loosened, and the set-screws d d turned forward as far as it is desired to set the said blades up at their l'heels. The screws a a are then tightened again, and the blades are held fast in the desiredposition. When the knives or blades wear out the old ones can be replaced by 'new ones.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is- Adjusting the knives or bladesCfChpon thel jaws B'B of the shears, substantialljtin the manner and for the purpose herein specified. l l In testimony Ithat we claim the foregoing, we have 'hereunto set our hands and seals this 15th day of October, 1866.
V1.5L /P.` BALL, Y l A. L. GRAVES.
