SPEED-REGULATING MECHANISM FOR MUSIC-SHEETS 0F AUTOMATIC INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,864, dated November 29, 1898. hpplication filed March 12,1898. Serial No. 673,585. (No model To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. HEDGE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Speed-Regulating Mechanism for Music-Sheets of Automatic Instru- Inents,of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the construction of anew and more practical form of friction mechanism than has heretofore been used for carrying power from the windmotor to the rolls carrying the controlling music strips or sheets employed in self-playing musical instruments and for governing the speed of the music strips or sheets.
The invention consists in the combination, with the motor and a take-up roll carrying or actuating the music sheet, of a coneshaped pulley receiving power from the motor and a friction-wheel bearing on the pulley and adjustably supported upon a shaft carrying motion to the take-up roll arranged parallel to the acting face of the pulley.
The nature of the invention and its operation will be fully understood from the description given below and the accompanying drawings, in which latter- Figure l is aplan view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of my invention.
In said drawings, A represents the take-up roll, upon which the controlling music-sheet is wound during the playing of the instrument, and'B is the music-roll from which the sheet is drawn during the playing.
C represents the tracker-range.
D is a pulley which is belted to a suitable motor for operating the music-sheet. This motor is not shown, as its construction is not material to the present invention. It may and preferably does operate in but one direction. The shaft D of this pulley is supported by the blocks D both mounted upon a plate or base D which is preferably pivoted at one end so as to be adjustable, ashereinafter specified.
Upon the shaft D is mounted the cone-pulley E, which contacts with and drives a friction-wheel F, carried upon a shaft G, which is arranged parallel and adjacent to the face of the cone-pulley. The shaft Gis joined to the roll A in such manner as to operate the latter. The wheel F is adjustable upon shaft G, so it may be moved along the face of the cone-pulley and be actuated thereby at any rate of speed desired, and this adjustment may be effected in any suitable way, preferably by joining the wheel to a sleeve F, which has freedom to slide along the.
shaft in obedience to devices under the control of the operatoras, for instance, the rod F joined to an elbow-lever F pivoted at F", and actuating the sleeve through the medium of a link F pivoted to the lever at one end and having a strap F, extending around the enlarged end F of the sleeve and lying in the groove F formed therein.
By means of the mechanism thus far described it will be seen that the music-sheet will be operated by power from the motor and that the speed with which the sheet is moved can be regulated by simply adjusting the friction-wheel F so as to bring it in contact with the large or the small part of the conepulley, as desired.
To make the device capable of rewinding, I employ the following: The cone pulley is supported, as already stated, upon a movable base D and this movable feature is used for the purpose of destroying the contact between the cone-pulleyand the friction-wheel whenever any rewinding is to be done, and the result is effected by the stop rod or connection H. The end of pulley-shaft D is joined to a stud shaft J by a gimbal or universal joint J and rotates said shaft. The shaft J carries a pulley J bolted to another and preferably a smaller pulley J adapted to be clutched to the music-roll or to a connection suitable for actuating the roll by the normally open clutch shown at J. lVhen the instrument is playing, the pulleys J 2 and J 3 rotate idly 5 but when the cone pulley is shifted away from the friction wheel the clutch J 4 is closed by the spring J 5 upon the arm J actuated from the base D by any suitable means-as, for instance, the elbowlever J pivoted at J 8 and joined to the arm J at one end and to the pulley-base at the other end, the latter union being by means of a pin J 9 upon the base working in the slot J in the lever. The base of the cone-pulley is pivoted at the end directly under and co ineidentlywith the center of the gimbal-join t, the pivot not being shown. By this construction the operator is enabled to cause the rewinding of the music-sheet Whenever necessary by simply operating the stop ll so as to separate the friction devices and cause the engagement of the clutch J and he does this without stopping or slowing the motor or changing the direction of its movement.
I claim 1. The combination in a self-playing instrument, of a cone-pulley driven by the motor and having a clutch connection to one of the music-sheet rolls, a friction-wheel bearing on said pulley and connected to the other roll, said pulley and Wheels being separable to permit action by the clutch in rewinding, substantially as specified.
2. The combination in a self-playing instrument, of a cone-pulley driven by the motor and having a clutch connection to one of the in usic-sheet rolls, a friction-wheel bearing on said pulley and connected to the other roll, said pulley being movable away from the Wheel to permit action by the clutch in rewinding, substantially as specified.
3. The combination in a self-playin g instrument, of a cone-pulley driven by the motor and having a clutch connection to one of the music-sheet rolls, a friction-wheel bearing on said pulley and connected to the other roll, said pulley being mounted upon a support which is movable to carry the pulley away from the wheel and which also acts to close the clutch, substantially as specified.
l. The combination in a self-playing instrument, of a cone-pulley driven by the motor and mounted upon a movable support, a pulleyJ connected to said cone-pulley by a universal joint, a pulley J driven from pulley J anormally open clutch for connecting pulleyJ with the music-roll, and means forclosing said clutch, substantially as specified.
5. The combination in a self-playing instrument, of a cone-pulley driven by the motor and mounted upon amovable support, a pulley J 2 connected to said cone-pulleybyauniversal joint, a pulley J driven from pulley J a normally open clutch for connecting pulley J 3 with the music-roll, and means connecting said cone-pulleysupport to said clutch so that when said support is moved the clutch Wlll be closed, substantially as specified.
