INTUBATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,854, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed December 9, 1897. Serial No. 661,307. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANTON FRANK and LOUIS ROMAN KRATZMUELLER, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Intubator and Extubator, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in a combined intubator and extubator for inserting and extracting intubation-t ubes provided with jaws which work like the beak of a bird; and the objects of our invention are, first, that the two lever-shanks do not take more spacewhen open than when closed; second, that it consists of less parts than any other combined in and ex tubator, making its Work- 'ing much smoother,and thereby greatly facilitating the very difficult operation, and that the screw uniting the levers cannot be lost; third, that the instrument is easily separable and perfectly aseptic, having no cavities, and, fourth, that the simplicity of the instrument makes its working a certainty, which is most important, as the instrument is always used in case of utmost emergency and the loss of a second may mean the loss of the life of the patient on whom it is used.
e attain these objects by the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a complete in and ex tubator as operated. Intubation-tube is shown in dotted lines. Figs. 2 and 3 are the top and side views of the handle-lever. Figs. 4 and 5 are the top and side views of the combined operating and ratchet lever. Fig. 6 shows in enlarged size the thumb-screw about which as a fulcrum the two levers turn.
Two levers 1 and 2, pivoted together by means of thumb-screw 3, comprise the complete in and ex tubator. Lever 1, having at one end the handle 4 and at the other end the jaw 5, of a slender and somewhat conical form, is tapped for the thumb-screw 3 near the widened angle formed between jaw 5 and lever 1. Lever 2 has on one end the jaw 6, of the same shape as jaw 5 of lever 1. These jaws or blades 5 and 6 work like a beak and are roughened at the external surfaces,which are intended to grasp the inside walls of the intubatiomtubes. Spring-trigger 7, at the other end of lever 2, is bent in the same direction as the jaw 6 and passes through the slot 8 of enlarged part 9 of lever 1. Teeth are cut into spring trigger 7, which engage with tongue 10 of slot 8. Thumb-screw 3 holds together levers 1 and 2 near the angle formed by the junction of the blades or jaws 5 and 6 with levers 1 and 2, respectively. When thumb-screw 3 is screwed entirely into tap 11 of lever 1, the slot 12 oflever 2 can be slipped over rivet-shank 13 of thumb-screw 3, in order to entirely separate the two levers for cleaning purposes.
WVhen thumb-screw 3 is screwed back, its knob 14 engages with countersunk recess 15 and keeps lever 2 from displacement. Knob 14 being larger than tap-hole 11 makes the screw irremovable, so that it cannot be lost. When hole 8 is in the middle of spring-trigger 7, the shanks of levers 1 and 2.cover each other, so that the smallest possible space is occupied by the shanks when the beak is fully opened or closed.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a combined intubator and extubator, the combination of one lever, having on one end a jaw roughened outside, and a thumb-screw consisting of the screw proper, screwed into a tap located near the angle formed by the junction of the jaw and lever, this thumbscrew having on one end a roll 15, on the other end a rivet-shank and knob, on the other end of the lever a handle and a slot 8, with another shorter lever, having on one end a jaw also roughened outside, and a slot with a recess near the angle formed by the junction of jaw and lever, said slot and recess containing the rivet-shank and knob of the thumb-screw, on the other end of the second lever a spring-trigger passing through slot 8 and adapted to be worked by thumb and index-finger of the hand substantially as set forth.
