Beit known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Pillow Attachment for Hammocks or Chair-Backs, of which the following is. a specification.

My invention relates to a pillow attachment for hammocks and chair-backs in which provision is made for removably attaching the pillow to the hammock or chair-back in such a manner that it may be adjusted to suit the occupant, while the means for attaching it are hidden from ordinary View.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a partial top plan View of a hammock, showing the pillow in position for use and partly broken away. Fig. 2' is a longitudinal section of the same from front to back. Fig. 3 is a back view of the pillow. Fig. 4 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of a modified form. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. (3 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of another modified form.

I have chosen a hammock for the purpose of illustrating the practical embodiment of my invention; but I do not wish to limit its use to a hammock alone, as it is equally applicable to a chair-back, stretcher, or bed bottom, or wherever it is desirable to adjust a pillow to suit different occupants.

The pillow is denoted by A. In the form shown in Fig. 1 there are secured at the back of the pillow one or more slats, in the present instance three, (denoted by B B B In the present instance the slats B B B are secured to the pillow-back by means of end pieces]; I). The end pieces I) b may be made of webbing or other pliable material and secured to the back of the pillow to form sockets a for the reception of the ends of the slats. In the present instance the slats B B are made removable, while the slat B is fas tened permanently to the back of the pillow.

The body of the hammock or other support to which the pillow is to be attached is denoted by C. It is provided in the present instance with a strip or band D of webbing or other suitable fabric sewed or otherwise secured at its opposite ends to the support C, as shown at c c. desirable to make the strip or band longer than the width of the pillow. The strip or band and the slats are brought into assembled adjustment by passing the strip or band D between the slats B B and the back of the pillow and over the outer face of the slat B. This may be accomplished by removing the slats B B and inserting them between the body of the support '0 and the strip or band D. WVhen so assembled, the pillow may be moved toward and away from the end of the hammock within the limits of the length of the space between the strip or band D and the support C and may be moved to the right or left within the limits of the difierence between the width of the strip or band D and the length of the slats. In whatever position the pillow be adjusted it will be held by the frictional grip brought to bear upon the slats by the strip or band D and body C, and this grip will be increased by the weight of the person occupying the hammock.

In the modified form represented in Figs. 4 and 5 the slats are formed by a piece of heavy wire E, having eyes 6 at its opposite ends, by means of which it may be sewed to the back of the pillow, the wire being extended back and forth between the eyes 6 to form parts. over and under which the strip or band D may be passed. In this form the pillow may be made removable by buttoning or otherwise securing one end of the strip or band D toan end of the support C, as at cl.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 6 the slats at the back of the pillow are shown formed of heavy wire E, so bent as to present a middle tongue portion 6', having one of its ends free and thereby permitting it to he slipped underneath the strip or band D, while the latter may be permanently secured at its opposite ends to the supporting-body C.

It is obvious that changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but

\Vhat I claim is- 1. In combination a pillow and its support, the one provided with a strip or band secured thereto and the other with one or more slats arranged to engage the said strip or band, the said strip and slats having a removable engagement with each other, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination a pillow and its support, the one provided with a strip or band secured thereto and the other with one or more slats arranged to engage thestrip or band, the said slats having a sliding engagement with the strip or band lengthwise of the said strip or band whereby the pillow may be bodily adjusted lengthwise of the said strip or band, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination a pillow and its support, the one provided with a strip or band secured thereto and the other with one or more slats arranged to engage the strip or band, the said slats having a sliding engagement with the strip or band in a direction across the latter whereby the pillow may be bodily adj usted transversely to the said strip or band, substantially as set forth.

4. In combination a pillow and its support, the one provided with a strip or band secured thereto and the other with one or more slats arranged to engage the strip or band, the said slats having a sliding engagement with the strip or band both lengthwise and crosswise of the latter whereby the pillow maybe bodily adjusted in both a longitudinal and transverse direction, substantially as set forth.
