CORSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,105, dated October 25, 1898.

Be it known that I, J AMES C. ANDREWS, of Springeld, in the county of IIampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and

1o which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, irl- Figure l, a side view of one-half of a corset embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional View on the line a b of Fig. l.

This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, and particularly to that class in which the side section is made in two parts, so as to reinforce the corset at the waist-line to prevent the breaking of steels at that point.

zo The object of this invention is to construct the side section of a corset in two parts, so as to reinforce the waist-line, yet in no wise interfere with the iit or strength of the corset at the top and bottom.

z 5 Another object is to provide a guard to eX- tend over the upper edges of the skirts to prevent them working up above the waist; and the invention consists in the construction as herein described, and particularly recited in 3o the claim. v

As herein shown, the corset consists of three sections-a front or bust section A, a rear or back section B, of any desired cut and boned in the usual manner, and a side D. The side 3 5 section, to which this invention particularly relates, is formed in two independent parts. The outer one E, extending from the upper edge of the corset downward below the waistline, and from a point at the waist-line, is in- 4o dependent of the front and back, forming a free [lap F. The inner section G extends upward from the bottom of the corset to a point above the waist-line, the edges of the two sections being firmly united to the front and back sections, except for the Iiap F, above mentioned, and so that the corset is substantially as rigid against lateral strain as though the side sections were in one piece; but in bending at the waist the sections yield or ride one upon the other, so as to readily conform 5o to the shape of the wearer, and as one section overlaps the other a double thickness is provided at the waist, and so as to form a perfectly smooth surface over the hips. If desired, the skirt-band may be passed beneath the flap E, which will prevent the bands riding upward, a diculty experienced by women having broad hips.

I am aware that corsets having overlapping sections at the side are old, and therefore do 6o not wish to be understood as claiming,broadly, such as my invention; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In` a corset, the combination with the front and back sections thereof, of a side section comprising two independent parts, both united at their edges to the front and back sections, the lower end of the upper outer 7o section detached from the front and back sections beneath which waistbands may be passed, substantially as described.
