WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM D. HAMILTON, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,033, dated October 25, 1898.
Application filed January 22, 1898- Serial No. 667,530. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM D. HAMILTON, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows in perspective a corner of a box and lid embodying myinvention. Figs. 2 and 3 are like views illustrating modifications.
The object of my invention is to provide means for making an air-tight joint between the lid and body of a box.
The invention is especially desirable in its application to the sealing of burial-cases for bodies of persons who have died from contagious or other diseases or for sealing caskets used in shipping bodies; but my invention is of general application and is not limited in respect of the use to which it may be put.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 2 represents the side of a box having at its up peredge a groove 3, preferably of tapering form. On the lid of the box is a projecting tongue 4, constituted preferably of sheet metal doubled and bent so as to form a hollow two-sided projection and adapted to enter the groove 3. The tongue by reason of its construction is somewhat compressible laterally by its engagement with the sides of the groove, and will thus make a tight joint. For greater security I may place an elastic filling 5, of rubber or other material, in the bottom of the groove. I prefer to make the tongue 4: integral with a metallic lining applied to the lid, and I may also line the groove 3 with metal, which may be integral with a sheet-lining of the interior of the box.
In Fig. 2 I show a modified construction in which for greater security the bottom of the second or supplemental groove 8, into which a second tongue or projection 9 on the lid may be fitted.
Other modifications Will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
I claim- 1. The combination of a box and a removable lid, one of which has a groove and the other a metal tongue having a space between its sides, whereby when the tongue is placed in the groove the sides of the tongue are compressed by the sides of the groove.
2. The combination of a box and a removable lid, one of which has a tapering groove and the other a tapering metal tongue having a space between its sides, whereby when the tongue is placed in the groove the sides of the tongue are compressed by the sides of the groove.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM D. HAMILTON.
