No. 6ll,363. Patented Sept. 27, I898. A. HAZELTUN & C. H. RIGG.
BOUQUET HOLDER.
\ (Application filed (No Model.)
lTED a ASA HAZELTON AND CHARLES H. RIGG, OF MIDDLETOWN, MISSOURI.
BOUQUET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,363, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed March 28,1898. Serial No. 675,464. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ASA HAZELTON and CHARLES H. RIGG, citizens of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Bouquet-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bouquet-holders.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bouquet-holders and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device adapted to engage yieldingly the stems of the flowers of a bouquet and capable of serving as the frame for pictures, so that it may be conveniently employed as a campaign-badge or the like.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bouquet-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device open. Fig. 4 is a Vertical sectional View. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view.-
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin s.
1 designates a bouquet-holder comprising a front frame 2 and a back 3, consisting. of a flat plate hinged to the front frame. The front frame 2 consists of a plate provided at its edges with flanges and having openings 5 at its front for displaying campai gn-pictures and the like. The front of the device may, if desired, be ornamented with an emblem, so that thedevice will serve as a combined badge and bouquet-holder. When pictures are arranged within the frame 2, a backing-sheet 5 of suitable material is employed to prevent the stems of flowers from coming in contact with the pictures. when the hinged back is open, a picture may be readily placed in the frame and removed therefrom, and the said'hinged back serves to hold the picture in the frame, as well as to clamp the stems of the flowers.
The flanges at the top and bottom of the frame are provided with curved recesses 6,
forming seats or partial sockets for the stems of flowers, and the latter are engaged by hori zontal springs 7, arranged across the inner face of the hinged back and bowed to form a yielding convex engaging face or cushion, so that the stems of flowers may. be firmly clamped without bruising the same.
The back 3, which is hinged at one of its side edges, is provided at the other side edge with a strip 8, of metal, secured at its ends to the back and oifset between its ends to provide a finger-hold, so that the device may be readily opened.
The bouquet-holder is provided at the top and bottom of the frame with eyes 9, arranged in pairs and receiving vertical pins 10, which secure the device to the lapel of a-coat and which also serve for holding the device closed. The upper ends of the pins are provided with enlarged heads or eyes, so that they may be readily grasped in attaching the device to and removing it from a coat.
The invention has the followingjadvantages: The device, which is simple and inexpensive in construction, is adapted to serve as a combined bouquet-holder and picture, and it is also adapted to serve as a badge. The springs are adapted to engage the stems of flowers yieldingly, and they are capable of holding a picture firmly in its proper position. The said springs also render the device adjustable and enable it to receive bouquets of different sizes, and the locking-pins serve the double purpose of holding the device closed and of attaching the same to the coat of a person.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
WVhat we claim isp 1. A device of the class described, comprisin g a frame provided at its edges with flanges and having an opening, said frame being adapted to receive a picture, a back plate hinged to the frame and arranged to clamp a bouquet between it and the same, and also ar ranged to engage and confine a picture in the frame, and means for holding the device closed and for securing it to a coat, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprisin g a frame provided with an opening for displaying a picture and having marginal flanges with upper and lower bouquet-receiving recesses, a back hinged to the frame at one side thereof and adapted to clamp a bouquet in the recesses and hold a picture in the frame, and means for holding the device closed, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a front plate 01' frame, a flat back hinged to the front plate or frame and adapted to clampabouquet between it and the same, and a bowed spring arranged within the device and presenting a convex face for yieldingly engaging and cushioning the stems of flowers, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising a front plate or frame, a back hinged to the front plate or frame at one side thereof, and transverse springs located at the top and bottom of the device, mounted on one of the parts thereof and bowed to provide cushions for engaging the stems, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprisand bottom with recesses, a hinged back, eyes arranged in pairs and mounted on the front plate or frame at opposite sides of said recesses, and pins passing through the eyes and serving to hold the device closed and to attach the same to a coat, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affiXed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
