Description
No. 6II,028,. Patented Sept. 20, |898. J. BRYSCH.
WHISTLE PIPE.
(Applition mod Sept. 98, 1897.)
(lo Modal.)
UNITED rSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BRYSCII, OF SKRONSKAU, GERMANY.
WHISTLE-PIPE.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.` 611,028, dated September 20, 1898. Application filed September 23,1897. Serial No. 652,712. (No model.)
To all whom it .may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BRYSCH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and'a resident of Skronskau, in the district of Kostellitz, Upper Silesia, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Vhistle-Iipes, Flutes, and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention consists of an improvement in whistle-pipes, flutes, and the like.
Instead of forming the various notes by means of holes in the pipe or valves, as hitherto, the various tones are produced by means of a piston or plunger movable in the pipe and by which moans the length of the latter is varied, and in order to render the present specification more easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawing, which lshows alongitudinal section through a whistle-pipe constructed according to the present invention.
The pipe consists, mainly, of two parts A and B, the former comprising the tube or pipe a, having the plug c and vent I, as usual, and the latter consisting of the rod (j, having piston or plunger f and handle 7L. The end of the pipe a is closed by a disk or gland e, into which the piston-rod fits air-tight. The various tones are produced by shortening the length of the pipe by means of the piston f.' The rod g of the latter is provided with a series of notches 'i 2 3 4, dsc., by means of which the various tones may be determined.
Thus if it is required to sound do the first notch will be employed, the piston being pushed into the pipe as far as the same. If mi is required, the piston will be pushed into the pipe up to notch No. 3, and so on.
In playing the instrument the pipe is held with the left hand, the right-hand thumb-nail is placed on the piston-rod over the notches and inserted into the notch corresponding to the note which is to be sounded, and the rod is pushed into the pipe up to the thumbnail by one of the other fingers of the right hand, which should bc inserted into the handle h. A
It will only be necessary for beginners to use the not-ches, as experienced players will be able to sound the right note without the aid of the notches.
I claim as my invention- In a whistle-pipe having a piston movable therein and a piston-rod to operate same, the combination of a series of notches on the said rod, corresponding to the notes of the tonic` scale, into which notches the linger-nail of the player may be inserted to ilxthc position of the piston for a certain note substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
.IOSEIII llRYSCll.
IVit-nesses ERNST Knfrz, HERMA NN lhin'rson'.
