ATENT THOMAS S. JAMES, OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS.
DRAWERS-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,989, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed September 15, 1897. 'Serial No. 651,818. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Drawers-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for distributing the strain upon the waistband of trousers and supporting drawers, and which consist of a plate secured to the waistband of the pants and a button applied to the waistband of the undergarment to engage with the said plate. 7
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of inner and outer pants, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the plate or stay to be applied to the waistband of the trousers. Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of the clasp for detachable connection with the inner pants or drawers and having a button or headed stud for engagement with the stay or plate applied to the trousers. Fig. 4 is a detail View in perspective of the clasp. Fig. 5 is a rear view thereof.
The plate or stay 1 may be constructed of any suitable material possessing flexibility and rigidity and is preferably formed of spring metal, which is elastic and capable of sustaining a great amount of weight and strain, and in the event of sheet-steel being utilized it will be rendered proof against corrosive action by japannin g or otherwise coat ing it, as commonly practiced in the art for providing stays or stitfeners for wearing-apparel of various kinds. This plate or stay is applied to the waistband of the trousers, preferably near the sides and opposite the point of attachment therewith of the front ends of the volved in providing the same.
suspenders, thereby transferring the weight and strain of the nether garment to the said suspenders. This plate or stay is located upon the inner side of the waistband and is secured at its ends thereto, either by stitching or in any manner desired, but preferably by means of the buttons 2, to which the front ends of the suspenders are connected, thereby taking advantageof the means for securing the buttons to the trousers, likewise as means for fastening the plate or stay and obviating the necessity for extra securing means for the plate and'the cost which would be in- 7 By having the plate or stay secured to the waistband at its ends the intermediate portion is left free, so that the means provided to cooperate with the plate may be readily attached to or disconnected therefrom, as will be obvious.
The plate or stay 1, applied in the manner set forth, stiffens the waistband of the trousers and distributes the weight and strain of the inner pants over a greater extent and obviates the binding of the waist by the contracting of the waistband, which would result by the omission of the plate or stay, as commonly experienced by the means generally employed for attaining the object of the present invention. The upper edge of the plate or stay has an inwardly-extending notch 4 to receive a button or headed stud 5, applied to the waistband of the inner pants in any manner desired, and said notch may extend inward simply or may branch laterally on curved or straight lines, forming an'approximately T-shaped slot having an upwardlyextending point opposite the opening.
The button or headed stud 5 may be sewed or otherwise secured to the waistband of the inner garment or drawers 8 and is designed to be engaged with the T-slot t of the plate or stay 1, and, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, it is secured to a clasp 3, whereby provision is had for readily disconnecting the button from or applying it to the nether garment 8, so as not to interfere with the laundering thereof.
The clasp 3 to be applied to the garment 8 is formed of a strip of metal folded upon itself and havin a roll at one end and lateral shoulders 11 at its edges near its opposite end, the button or headed stud 5 being applied to a folded end portion of the strip a short distance from the bight. A catch-pin 12 is fulcrumed between its ends in the roll 13, and its points 14 are adapted to engage with the shoulders 11 to retain the garment in engagement therewith and between the parallel parts of the clip. The end 15 of the catchpin forms a grip for turning the pin in the roll 13 and folds close against the outer portion of the clip, so as to be out of-the way when the latter is applied to the garment. The roll 13 is notched or cut away midway of its ends to provide clearance for the looped end 15 of the catch-pin, whereby the latter is enabled to turn freely in the roll.
The plate or stay 1 may be straight or slightly curved, the latter being preferred, as it will conform more readily to the waist of the wearer without causing the least pressure at any point and may be applied to pants by the manufacturer or by the customer, and when applied to stock clothing the end portions of the plate or stay maybe concealed by being introduced between the layers or plies comprising the waistband of the trousers, as will be readily understood. Inasmuch as clencher-buttons are commonly applied to stock garments the plate or stay may be simultaneously secured to the trousers when applying the buttons thereto at one and the same operation, thereby avoiding the cost, which would add materially to the application of the invention if extra securing means were required to be provided.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a button applied to the waistband of a nether garment, of a plate placed against the inner side of the waistband of the trousers and having at an intermediate point an approximately T- shaped slot with a raised point opposite the opening, and Suspender-buttons securing the plate at its ends to the waistband of the trousers, substantially as described.
2. In aclasp for garment-supporters, a strip of metal folded upon itself forming parallel members, one of which has a button applied thereto and formed at its edges with shoulders, and a catch-pin fulcruined intermediate of its ends to the terminal portion of the other member and having its points adapted to engage over the aforesaid shoulders, substantially as described.
In a clasp for garment-supporters, a strip of metal doubled upon itself forming members, and having shoulders at the free end of one member and a roll at the outer terminal of the other member, a button or headed stud applied to one of the members, and a catchpin journaled in the said roll and having points to engage over the aforedescribed shoulders, and provided with an extension forming a grip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
TIIOS. S. JAMES.
