To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, MAX EDELMUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in. the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to water-heaters; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved portable heating apparatus which will be especially adapted for convenient and effective heating of the water in a bath-tub.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the heating device embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan View of the same.
The device is adapted to be seated or placed within a body of'water, the level of which is below the top plane of the heating drum or chamber, and is so constructed that it is adapted to quickly and effectively operate with relation to the surrounding body of water to thoroughly heat the same.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a drum which forms the heating-chamber of the device. This drum is preferably of approximately cone shape, having a convex bottom a, which conforms to the general contour of the bottom of a bath-tub. A further advantage of this convex bottom is that when resting upon an approximately flat surface it forms a resting-point of limited area, so that the body of water beneath said bottom and in contact therewith will be subject to the radiated heat. 13 designates an annular burner which is intcriorly arranged within the chamber A and is suitably supported a short distance above the bottom CL thereof. This burner is preferably formed of an annular tube or pipe havin g openings Z), which form the gas jets.
Communicating with the burner B is a connecting tube or pipe 0, which extends laterally from the chamber or vessel A and to the outer end of which is connected an extension D, which is preferably turned vertically, said extension being adapted to feed the gas to the connecting-tube C, from whence it passes to the burner. The extension D carries at its top end a suitable cock E, which may be formed witha conical threaded end e, to which a flexible tube may be conveniently connected and arranged to extend from any suitable gas-fixture or other source of gas-supply.
F designates an air-feed tube which is open at its top, as shown at f, and has a closed bottom f. The bottom portion of said tube F intersects the connecting tube or pipe 0, and the latter is provided at its portion Within the tube F, preferably at the under side, with an opening a. By reason of the relative construction and arrangement just described air is fed from the tube F through the opening 0 and into the connecting-tube C, so that it mixes with the gas passing through the latter.
G designates an air-supply tube or pipe for conveying the proper air-feed to the burner. This tube G has an open top end, as at g, and an open bottom end, as at 9. Its lower portion 9 enters the vessel or chamber A on a diagonal plane, as shown in Fig. '1, and projects within and below the annular tube or ring forming the burner, so that the open lower end g is on a plane immediately beneath the burner.
The tube F and the exterior portion of the tube G are preferably arranged in parallel position and extend vertically with relation to the vessel or chamber A. These tubes F and G may be connected together or braced at their adjoining top ends and the gas-feed tube D may be connected with the tube F by means of a bracket, as at h, which construction and arrangement, in connection With the fact that the connecting-tube O intersects and passes through the lower end of the tube F, provides a strong relative construction in IOO tion may be conveniently connected with the attachment end e of the gas-feed pipe D.
It will be understood that the gas is fed through the pipe D and connection 0 to the burner B, while the tube F supplies air to the gas-connecting tube C and the tube G supplies air at the base of the vessel or chamber A.
The conical form of the vessel A is specially adapted to retain the heat interiorly, and at the same time it presents an enlarged surfaceheating area in contact with the surrounding body of water.
A further advantage of the conical-shaped vessel or chamber as comprised in my invention is that said vessel is adapted to safely maintain an upright position within the body of Water, this condition being further enhanced by the fact thatthe weight of the burner and the air and gas feed connections are all at the base portion of the vessel.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described device for heating water, said device comprising a conical casing open at the top and closed at the bottom, a curved tube mounted in said casing adja cent to the bottom thereof, and provided with flame slots or openings in its bottom, a main gas-supply tube connected therewith and projecting through one side of the casing near the bottom thereof, and provided with an upwardly-directed extension, an upright airbeing above the top of said casing, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described device for heating water in a tank or other vessel, said apparatus consisting of a conical casing provided with a convex and closed bottom, and an open top, a circular burner-tube supported adjacent to the bottom of said casing and provided with perforations or openings, a main gas-supply tube communicating therewith and extending through the side of the casing, an upright supplemental gas-supply tube connected therewith, said gas-supply tube being also perforated and provided with an upright air-supply tube through which it passes, and a supplemental air-supply tube which passes through one side of said casing, and diagonally downwardly thereinto, and the outer end of which terminates above the top of said casing.
