TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHILION B. ALLEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented an improved Composition for Roofing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exac description of the same.
The object of my invention is to prepare an economical and durable composition for covering the roofs and sides of buildings, boat decks, and for all other purposes to which said composition or plastic roofing, may be adapted.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I take what is generally known as slate rock and pulverize it in a grist or plaster-mill, and with this fine powder I mix pulverized plaster (land or boiled) in about an equal proportion, or in any desirable proportion, owing to the purpose for which the composition is to be used. To this mixture I add any suitable glutinous water-proof material, as oil paint, gas tar, coal tar, pine tar, so that the mixture may be of such a nature as to be easily spread with a brush or trowel. I r
When used for roofing, the composition should be of then'consistency of thin mortar, and may be applied to the boards or to paper, canvas, felt, or other suitable material, either before or after fastening it to the roof but when used for covering the sides of buildings, boat decks, &c., the composition shbuld be of the consistency of common paint, and may be applied with an ordinary paint brush.
The composition should be spread soon after mixing. When hardened, it makes adurable, elastic, fire and Water-proof covering, and is much cheaper than when slate flour is used Without the pulverized plaster.
I do not claim the use of coal tar or of slate flour for roofing, but what I do claim as my invention, and
desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The use of pulverized plaster (land or boiled) in combination with slate flour and other ingredients for roofing, covering the sides of buildihgs, boat 'decks, &c., substantially as herein described and set forth.
CHILION B. ALLEN.
