'lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL YOUNG, of Amanda, Fairfield county, State of Ohio, have .invented a. new .and useful Improvement in Auger for Fitting Spokes and Felle-es; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved auger. Figure 5.. is an end view of the same; Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of ,the same taken through the line :a x, iig. 2. -Figurc 4 is a crosasection of the same taken through the line y y, iig. 3.
ASimilar letters of reference indicate like parts. My invention has for its object to furnish improved tools for fitting spokes and felloes together, so that they may tit each other exactly and insuch a way as to give the greatest strength to that part of the tenen -which is nearest the inner side of the felloes and upon which comesthe greatest strain; and it consists, lirst, in
an improved spoke-tenoning auger formed by combining an adjustable knife or cutter for forming the tapering sides of the tenon and two knives or cutters for forming the shoulder of the tenen with the hollow shank er lbody ofI the auger.
A is the shank, by means of which the auger is attached to the brace or ether-instrument for operating it. B is the body of theauger, the lower part of which is made hollow and the extreme lower part or end, tapering to correspond with the desired taper of the tenen.l This lower part, b, is slotted longitudinally for the reception of' the cutter C, and also to allow the chips to escape from the auger. D is a block attached t0 the side of the body, B, of the auger to assist in supporting the cutterl C The cutter C is attached tothe edge of the said slotv and to the side of the block D by two screws passing through slots in the said cutter andscrewing into the said block D, s0 'that the cutter C may be adjusted as required. 'The cutting edge of the knife, C, is made slightly -ilaring, so that it may make a cut a little wider vthan itself. Around the lower edge of the body B of the auger is formed a iiange, b2, to support the cutters E which form the shoulder ofthe tenon of the spokes. These cutters E are set a little inclined, so that their edges, e', may slightly project to take hold of and operate upon the spoke being tenoued. The chips made bythe cutters E escape through the notches or slots b3 formed beneath the cutting edges et' the said knives 13. These cutters are attached to the body of the auger by screws, two to each, as shown in hg. 2. By thev use of this instrument the tenen is made strongest at the inner edge of the felloes, at which pointthe spokes are more liable .to break than at any other.
Having thus described nay invention, what I claim as-neiv, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
As an article oi' manufacture, the hereinbefore-described tool formed with the knives C and E attached to thc hollow tapering body B, formed with the'shank A, for attaching the tool to a brace, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this day of 1866;
. .EMANUEL YOUNG.
Witnesses PETER Mnrnns,
DANIEL- PHILIPS.
