SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,584, dated August 23, 1898.

7 Improvement in Fire Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of chemical fire-extinguishers of that class which are known as hand extinguishers; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved fire-extinguisher of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to provide improved means for the support and operation of the stopper which normally closes the acid-bottle, to so construct and arrange the parts of my device as to obviate any tendency toward corrosion, to provide against the entrance of moisture, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved fire-extinguisher. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the acid-bottle and its supporting frame or cage. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line :1; x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation of the acid-bottle stopper. Fig. 5 is an enlarged under side view of said stopper. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the stopper-support. Fig. 7 is an under side view of the same. Fig. Sis a central vertical section of the upper portion of my improved fire-extinguisher, showing the mouth of the acid-bottle closed. Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the mouth of said acid-bottle open, said view being taken at right angles with that shown in Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is a view in elevation of the bottle-stopper guide frame or cage.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a vertical tank 1, of suitable metal, the latter being provided on its upper end with a short neck portion or mouth 2, said neck portion being externally threaded, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings.
3 represents a detachable cap, the lower and internally-threaded portion of which is adapted to screw onto the threaded portion of the tank-neck 2. The under side of the cap 3 is also provided with an internallythreaded socket or recess 4:, which is of less diameter than the mouth of the tank, while the upper side of the cap is provided with an upwardly-extending arch or frame-yoke 5. On opposite sides of the cap I provide 1aterally-projecting handles 6. Screwed into the internally-threaded socket or recess 4 of the cap isthe upper ring-shaped end of a bottlestopper guide-frame 7. The lower end of this frame is also in the form of an externallythreaded ring 8, which is supported at a point below the mouth of the tank and within the latter by vertical guide-arms 9, the upper ends of which connect with said upper ring 7. The substantially open cylindrical frame thus formed has screwed into connection with its lower end the upper ringshaped end 10 of a depending bottle-supporting cage or frame 11, the vertical arms 12 of which havetheir lower ends terminating about a disk-shaped frame or cage bottom 13. The cage thus formed is designed to close a vertical glass bottle 14.
, 15 represents a vertical rod or stem, the central portion of whichis threaded, as indicated at 16, said threaded portion passing through and engaging with the internal threads of an opening in the central portion of the cap-yoke 5. On the outer side of this cap-yoke said stem carries a suitable thumb-nut or rotating button 17.. The unthreaded portion of the stem orrod 15 passes downward through the central portion of the cap-body and normally extends within the neck of the tank 1. On its inner end this rod or stem 15 carries a suitable supporting plate or disk 18, the latter being formed with a downwardly and thence inwardly turned flange 19, which extends partially about the under side of said disk-body and results in the formation of a ledge or shoulder 20, which is shown more clearly in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.
,22 represents a bottle-stopper, which is of glass, the lower end portion of said stopper being adapted to enter the neck or'mouth of the bottle 14.. This stopper is provided with a peripheral enlargement 23, on the under side of which I provide a circular groove 24, which is adapted to receive the upper end of ings.
the bottle neck or mouth in the manner indicated more clearly in Fig. 8 of the draw- Above the enlargement 23 I provide said stopper with aperipheral recess or groove 25, the upper flange or shoulder 26, which is formed thereby, being, as indicated -more clearly at 27 in Fig. 5 of the drawings, partially cut away on opposite sides of the stop per-top. The bottle-stopper thus formed is adapted to be supported from the supporting plate or disk 18, said stopper being detachably connected therewith by having its upper end portion above the recess 25 inserted into the recess on the under side of said plate 18, formed by the production of the inturned flange 19.
In the upper side and centralportion of the cap-body 3 I provide about the opening through which the stem 15 passes a socket, which is adapted to receive a suitable packing-ring 28, this socket being formed in a short externally-threaded projection 29 of said cap-top and said threaded projection being adapted to have screwed thereon a thumbnut 30, which is adapted to bear upon the upper side of the packing-ring 28.
In the formation of the tank 1 Iprovide in the upper end portion thereof a suitable outlet-tube 1, with which is adapted to be connected a section of flexible hose 31, the latter being provided with a nozzle 32 and valve 33. In utilizing my device the tank is filled to a suitable height with water and soda, while the bottle 14 is, prior to its insertion within the tank, properly filled with sulfuric acid, The bottle-stopper being engaged with its supportingplate 18 and the cap 3 being screwed into connection with the upper end portion of the guide-frame 9, the lower end portion of said cap is then screwed onto the neck or upper end portion of the tank 1. This being accomplished, the stem 15 is rotated until the lower portion of the stopper 22 has descended into the bottle-neck and the upper end portion of said neck is within the stopper recess or groove 24. This being accomplished, thethumb-nut 30 may be rotated to compress the packing 28, and thereby aid in closing any space which may exist about the stem 15 against the entrance of air or liquid.
As is usual in devices of this character, it
becomes necessary in order to generate carbonic-acid gas Within the tank and to employ the latter for the purpose of extinguishing flame to invert the tank. Prior to"this operation, however, the stopper is withdrawn from the mouth of the bottle 14 byproper rotation of the stem 15, so that when said tank is inverted the contents of the bottle will be mingled with the contents of thetank, resulting in the generation of the carbonic-acid gas as desired and admitting of the latter being discharged through the outlet 1 and hose 31.
From the construction which I have described it will be seen that not only are superior means provided for the support of the bottle within the tank and for the support of the stopper therefor, but that said stopper is adj ustably supported and may be readily closed into contact with or disengaged from the mouth of the bottle.
It will be observed that the construction of my device is such as to admit of the ready removal and separation of the partsconnected therewith and that the bottle-stopper may when withdrawn be readily connected with or disconnected from its supporting-plate 18.
The construction of my device is such as to render the operation thereof simple and rapid and to make the same of great utility in case of fire.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' In a fire-extinguisher, the combination with a tank having an outlet, and a neck portion,
of a'cap 3 detachably connected with said tank-neck portion, a bottle-stopper guideframe 7 detachably connected with said cap, a cage or frame 11 suspended from-and having a threaded engagement with said stopper guide-frame, a bottle supported in said cage, a stopper-holding disk, an adjustable supporting-stem therefor and a stopper detachably connected withsaid disk and adapted to close the mouth of said bottle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
