TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, Znsnous SPERRY, of Potters Corners, in the county of Crawford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a churn constructed according to my invention.

, The leading feature of this invention consists in a novel means of operating a churn dasher, whereby, in addition to its reciprocating movement, the said dasher is made to'receive an alternate rotary motion in opposite directions, so that a much more efficient action of the dasher upon the milk or cream is secured than has been the case with the dash churns heretofore devised, the said dasher being also capable of being used with only a reciprocating movement if desired. The invention further consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts, whereby the most effective operation of the main feature of the invention issecured, and'whereby the case with which the churn may be used or operated is greatly enhanced, and great facility is afforded for cleaning the same when required.
' To enablc others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. I
The body or barrel of the churn is shown at A, and the inner edge of the top or upper end thereof is furnished with a rebate, a, as shown more plainly in fig. 2, in which the edges or periphery of "the cover A are placed, as shown in the said figure, the said cover being prevented from rising when the churn is in operation by means of small buttons, 1), which are pivoted in cavities, a formed at opposite sides of the upper surface of the cover, with their extremities catching in grooves or notches formed in the inner circumference of the upper end of the barrel A, as represented in dotted lines in fig. 1. Formed centrally in the cover A is a hole, 6, through which the dash-rod B is passed. The lower portion of this dash-rod is divided longitudinally, as shown in fig. 2, one half or section of.the said divided part being pivoted to the dash-rod, as shown at c in fig. 1, so that it may be turned outward when desired, as will be hereinafter fully explained. Formed centrally and longitudinally in this divided lower portion of the dash-rod is a cylindrical slot or socket, d, into which is fitted an upwardly projecting c'ylindrical stem, e, the lower end of which is screwed into a small metallicblock, e, fixed in the centre of the bottom of the barrel A. The object of this rod e is tosteady the lower end of the dash-rod B during thefoperation of churning, as will be hereinafter further set forth. The dasher is shown at B, and its main portion may consist of two fiat pieces of wood placed across each other at their centres and fitted snugly, but not permanently, upon the lower end of the dash-rod B. The dasher is furnished with a small upright spur, f, through which is passed a screw, f. The inner end of this screw f fits into a small notch or recess, f, in the lower end of the dash-rod B, and thus prevents the dasher from falling ofi' therefrom. Secured to each of the arms formed upon the dasher B, by the ends of the two transverse pieces forming the main portion thereof, as just set forth, is an upright vane, g, the flat sides of which should be nearly radial to the dash-rod. Formed in the main length of the dash-rod B, and extending spirally around the same, from the divided portion thereof to the upper end of the same, is a rectangular or other properly shaped groove, 71, and secured to the upper surface of the cover A, with its end fitted into this groove h, is a spur or stud, z, in such away that when the dash-rod is pushed downward the said rod and, consequently, the dasher 13, attached thereto, will receive a rotary motion in one direction, and when pushed upward will be caused to turn in an opposite direction, as will be hereinafter further explained. In order that the stud or spur 2' may be brought out of the groove 77, when desired, the said spur has its outer end pivoted in a small metallic block, 71., screwed fast to the cover A, with a pin, 9, passing through the said block and-through the spur i in such manner as'to retain the spur in a horizontal position when required, and yet permit the spur to be turned upward and removed from the aforesaid groove it by simply pulling out the said pin g. 0 indicates avertical guide which is secured upon the cover A, and retained in proper position by suitable supporting braces, C; and working in this guide 0 is a slide, D, the lower end of which is attached to the upper end of the dash-rod Bby meansiof a bolt, m, as shown in fig. 2, in such manner that while the aforesaid guide has simply a reciprocating movement the rotary motion hereinbefore described is'permitted to the dash-rod. E indicates a lever,vone endof which'is pivoted to an arm, E, which extends upward from one side of the barrel A. A,pin, n, projects from one side of the slide D, and extends through a slot, 1:, in the lever E, in such manner that by working the saidlever up and down a reciprocating movement will be communicated to the slide D, and consequently to the dash-rod B, the latter receiving, during; such reciprocating movement, a rotary movement bymeans of the spiral groove 7:, and stud or spur ,i, as hereinbefore' eirplained, this alternate rot/ary movement of the dasher causing the vanes g to throw the cream or milk outward against the sides ofthe barrel A, thus agitating or churning the said cream or milk to a much greaterextent at each stroke of the .dasher than if the said dasher had simply an up and down motion, at the same time that, if desired, the ordinary reciprocating movement may be given to the dasher by removing the pin g and turning the spurt upwards out of the groove h, as hereinbefore set forth. By,disconnecting the lever E from the pin n, and turning the buttons 6 around so that their extremities will be clear of the recesses or grooves in which they are placed, the cover A, together with the dash-rod B, and the parts connected therewith, maybe removed from the barrel A i The screw f being turned clear of the notohf, the dasher B may be pulled ofi'from the dash-rod B, and being thus separated therefrom, may be the more easily cleansed; and furthermore, the pivoted section c'may be turned or swung away fromthe remaining part of the lower portion of the dash-rod B, so that the slotd may be eleaned out with great facility. Furthermore, the stem 0 may be unscrewed from the block 2 and removed froxuthebarrel A, so that the interior of the said barrel is left unobstructed in order that it also may be very conveniently cleansed when desired.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The lever E, slide D, and guide C, combined in relation wi t h each other and with the spirally grooved dash-rod B, substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the pivoted stud of spur z and the pin g with reference to each other and with the spiral groove h of the dash-rod B, whereby the said stud or spur may be removed from the-groove h when desired,-substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
3. The construction of the lower portion of the spirally grooved dash rod B with a hinged or pivoted section,
0, arranged in relation with the slot or socket e thereof, substantially as herein set forth'for the purpose specified.
