JOHN E. OTTO, OF RUSH LAKE, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED BAG- HOLDER AND WIEI GHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,900, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed May 14, 1897. Serial No 636,601. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. OTTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rush Lake, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in a Combined Bag-Holder and Weigher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains'to improvements in combined bag-holders and weighers.
The object of my invention is to provide a device suitable for use in granaries and elsewhere which will simultaneously support the bag and its contents, hold the bag in an open position, and indicate the weight.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myinvention, showing the same as it is adjusted for the reception of the bag and with dotted lines indicating its position when adjusted to hold the bag. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my invention, with dotted lines indicating the bag as it is supported thereby. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pulley and tackle for raising and lowering the tongs with the bag and its contents.
Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
For holding the bag in an open position I have provided tongs, the actuating-arms A A of which are connected at their upper ends, on each side of a cross-head B, by means of a chain 0. The bag-holding members D D of the tongs are provided at their lower ends with outward projections E, which are preferably formed with a roughened surface adapted to prevent the bag from slipping. It will be observed that each member is formed of two side bars and a cross-bar connecting the outwardly-projecting portions E, so that the two members, when spread in the mouth of the bag, will cause the latter to assume a rectangularly-open position, supported along two sides by the projecting portions E and their connecting cross-bars.
F is a notched lever attached to the member D and adapted to engage a pin f, projecting from the member D, in order to hold the members in a closed position to facilitate their insertion in the mouth of the bag. The bag being in place, the lever F is released in contact with the floor or in a raised position, as may be desired.
The pulley is preferably formed of three members J, J, and K, as shown in Fig. 3. A supporting-rope L, attached to the cross-head B, is wound upon the members J and J of the pulley, and the actuating-rope M is wound upon the member K, the size of which may be altered in proportion to the members J and J to suit the desire of the user. The member J of the pulley is provided with a ratchet N, which is adapted to be engaged by a stop-dog or notched lever O for the purpose of holding the tongs in their raised position.
In use the tongs are raised to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the members D and D inserted in the mouth of the bag. The lever F is then released from its engagement with the pin f, whereby the tongs drop to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus opening the mouth of the bag and holding it in position for filling. WVhen the bag is filled, the weight of the contents is indicated by the scale H, and it may then be lowered to the floor by releasing the stop -dog or lever 0 from the ratchet N and letting the tongs down by means of the rope M until the bag rests on the floor. The tongs may then be released from the bag by pushing them together until the lever F engages the pin f.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa 1. In a combined bag-holder and weigher, the bag-holding tongs comprising the mem bers D and D, each formed of a pair of side bars having ofiset bag-supporting cross hars, a locking-hook for temporarily holding said members together, a cross =-head, and upwardly extending arms for actuating said bag-holding members connected to the cross bers D and D, each formed of a pair of side bars having offset bag-supporting cross-bars,
10 a locking-hook for temporarily holding said members together, a cross-head, and upwardly-extending arms for actuating said bag-holding members, connected to the cross head by flexible connections, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN E. OTTO.
