REVERBERATORY SMELTiNG FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,837, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed June 26, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LHENRY LEWIS CHARLES, of Butte, in the county of Silver BOW and State of Montana, have invented new Improvements in Reverberatory smelting-Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to reverberatory smelting-furnaces; and its obj eet is to provide a new and improved apparatus for conveniently and quickly removing the molten floating slag from the molten metal in a very economical manner and without danger of chilling the molten metal.
This invention consists in a furnace of such construction as will be fully described here inafter and defined in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevationof the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The improved apparatus is provided with a hearth A, which may be composed of a metal base-plate supporting a bed of fire-brick. The hearth contains the molten metal B and the slag B, likewise in a molten condition. and floating on the top of the molten metal B. The latter can be Withdrawn from the hearth in the usual manner through the matte tap-hole O, and the slag B is adapted to be driven through a slag-hole D, formed in one of the walls of the hearth and in a plate attached to said wall, as is plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The floating molten slag B is driven into this slag-hole D by the force of an air blast or blasts issuing through the twyers E, held approximately horizontal in the wall of the hearth A, located opposite the one containing the slag-hole D.
The discharge ends of the twyers E are somewhat above the level of the molten metal 13, so as to cause the air to act directly on the molten slag B to drive the same laterally into and throughthe slag-hole D. As shown in Fig. 2, the twyers E point toward the slaghole D to produce the desired result.
The several twyers E are connected with an air-chamber F, provided at one end with Serial No.-597,059. (N0 model.)
a safety-valve G and connected at its other end with the blast-pipe H for delivering the usual blast to the furnace. The blast-pipe H is connected with a blower I or other suitable source of air-supply, and the connection between the pipe H and the chamber F is controlled by 'a valve J, contained in the chamber F near the pipe 11. A second valve K is held in the air-blast pipe H, below the entrance of the chamber F into the said pipe H, so that when the said valve K is closed and the valve J is opened the air-blast passes from the pipe H into the chamber F and from the latter through the several twyers E upon the molten slag to drive the same to and through the slag-hole D, as previously explained.
' It is understood that it requires but a few minutes to remove the slag from the molten metal, and as soon as this has been accomplished the valve J is closed and the valve K is again opened to permit the air to pass over its regular course to the furnace.
Doors 6, respectively rolling in guidew'ays e, are respectively provided for the twyer-= openings, and by these means the twyeropenings may be closed when the twyers are withdrawn.
The hearth A, with its sides bulging or curved outward, enables the twyers E to be arranged properly with reference to the slaghole. This arrangement is such that the twyers extend radially with reference to the slag-hole and directs the slag in one graduallycontracting sheet through the slag-hole.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A reverberatory smelting-furnace, having an elongated hearth, one of its side Walls havin g a centrally-located slag-discharge orifice, and the other of said side walls having a plurality of twyer-openings, and a series of twyers respectively projected through said twyer-openings,the twyers being disposed an= gularly to each other and each radially from the slag-discharge orifice, so that the blast from the twyers is directed to and concentratcd at the slag-discharge orifice.
