have invented a new and improved Tatting Shuttle; I and I do'herehy-declar-e thefollowing to be a. full, cle'ar, and exact description of the saine, suicient to enable one skilledin'theart to which the invention appertains to make uee'of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which .for.ms a part of this specification, in which-.- A

Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section. Figure 2 is an elevation. v This shuttle is provided with s pin which can be projected. when it is required to pass a thread through a y loop to fasten one-section of the tatting to another, a sprin'g withdrawing 'the pin when not in use. It is usual to keep a pin in the bosom of the dress when tatting, as itis frequently though only occasionally required, the' greater part of the'work consisting of a. succession-of 'knots emefhitlmle through a. loop';

i but ornamental tatting is not a. merely continuous string of knots, but is united at various points 'oy knottiug into loops which are left occasionally for that purpose, the work being made to assume the form lof rosettes, leaves, scrolls, fret-work, Sie., &c., according to the taste and leisure of the person'.

In the drawing, the shuttle is shown made with cheeks aa, and a central spool upon which the thread is wound; b is a needle or sharp-pointed pin, which is retracted into the sheath C, by the spring d, but may, by pressure upon the stud e, be mede `to project asshown in red lines, in which position it is' useful for the purpose described of picking the thread through the loop'in the manner familiar to those acquainted with the operation. Thus the pin is kept constantly in readiness for use by a simplemotion of the thumb or finger which propels :it from -its case. v C

Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Yis The, tatting shuttle as an article of manufacture proi'rided with a. pin, thumbsknob, and retreating spring, substantially as described.
