JUAN S. L. BABES, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 60,843, dated January 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOVE-TAIL MACHINES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JUAN S. L. BABES, of the city of New Albany, in the county of Floyd, and State ofIndiana, have invented a' new and useful Improvement on the Hartwell Patent Dove-Tail Machine, patented March 22, 1864; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,l and exact description of the construction .and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of thisfspecication, in which- Figure 1 is a front perspectiveview.
Figure 2, a back perspective view; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the T-bit for making a T-lock joint in the construction of drawersy and boxes.
The nature of my improvement on the Hartwell patent dove-tail machine consists in thc manner and construction of my method of overcoming the limited capacity. of the box, as arranged on said machine, by the substitution of my open platforms, A A, which admit lumber o' all widths to be dove-tailed, and allow it to pass free right or left, as required, when applied to the Hartwell machine. The perpendicular platform A receives the lumber fasts or clamps, B13, are adjustable, and used on both platforms to hold the lumber while the cutters are at work, in combination with the said holdfasts. The adjustable blocks, C C, are so arranged to work on a screw on the end of the piston-rods that they may be set to hold'diiYerent thicknesses of lumber while being cut. Also theapplication of the four spring check gauges, D D D D, placed in slots, adjustable right or left, as required, held fast by means of thumb-nuts, Said gauges project out,l by the force of a spring, one-fourth of an inch, for the purpose of checking and gauging the marked edge of the lumber for the first cuts. Theidle gauges, when not in use, will fall back, giving the lumber a free bearing on the platforms. Also th'e manner'of constructing and arranging the graduating gauge-tits, E E, placed on each sideof the cutters,.F F F, projecting out by the force of a spring; said tits corresponding in height and diameter exactly with the cutters, for the purpose of graduating and receiving the right or left mortise made by each operation of the cutter. The idle gauge E and the check gauges D D drop back by the pressure of the lumber, and so give it a free bearing. The match gauges G G, and the rule gauges H H, are for matching the lumber of different Widths to be dove-tailed or otherwise, and in combination with the graduating gauges E E, all widths and lengths of lumber can be dove-tailed or other- Wise. Also theA application and usev of the T-bit or cutter, in combination with my open platforms, for the purpose ofmaking a T-lock joint, for the same purposes for which dove-tails are 'used in the construction of drawers, boxes, tc., &c., lite.
I. I claim none of the motions or arrangements of the Hartwell patent dove-tail machine; but I do claim the construction and larrangement of the two platforms A A, when applied in combination to the Hartwell patent dove-tail machine, or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
2. I do not claim the holdfasts or clamps B B; but I do claim the use o f said holdfasts or clamps, in combination with thel adjustable blocks C C, as applied to the combined platforms A A, when arranged and operating as andfor the purposes herein described.
3. I claim-'the use of the four spring check gauges D D D D, in combination with the platforms A A, Asub` stantially as arranged, and for the purposes as herein described.
4. I claim the construction `and arrangement of the two graduating gauge-tits E E, in combination with the combined platforms A A, operating substantially as arranged, and for the purposes as herein described.
JUAN S. L. BABBS.
