HUB ATTACHING DEVICE.

\ {wlll llljll lllllul illlllll llll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. EMERIGK, OF MONTANDON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HUB-ATTACHI NG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,364, dated August 2, 1898.
Application filed March 4, 1898. Serial No. 672,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. EMERIOK, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Montandon, county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hub-Attaching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a hub-attaching device which can be easily applied and operated.
' The nature of my invention will be described below and pointed out in'the claim.- v
Figure 1 is central longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 00. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line y 9. Fig. 4 is a detail of the combined key and washer. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the outer end of the journal, the key and washer removed.
- Like letters refer to like parts.
A is a spindle or journal having a proper opening or socket a for the reception of. the axle, which need not be shown here, and said journal can be securely attached to the latter in any suitable way. For attaching the hub, which is not'shown, a combined key B and washer C is used, the former turning loosely in the latter, which has afeather c, engaging groove on and made to match in width and partly in depth the portion 61 of the key, and
the disk portion of the washer should be large 7 enough to prevent any possibility of the hub slipping over. To prevent said washer from ever slipping ofi. from the key, the handle portion f of the latter is made partly in disk form. (See h.) The outer end of the keyshank is threaded, so that portion f may be screwed thereon.
In order to receive the combined key and washer, the outer end of the journal A is hollowed out to correspond. F is a socket for the inner end of the key. G, the most deeply cut-away portion, allows the key to turn and provides locking sides 1' and a stop 70 when the part cl of the key is inserted and turned to the left. To permit the initial insertion of the key and washer, a circular opening H, having a groove on to match said portion (1 and feather 0 when in line, is provided. It will now be seen that by inserting the key and washer and turning the former to the left there will be a quick and firm lock to prevent the hub from coming off, and that by turning the key to the right the key and washer can be at once taken out and the hub taken off.
The device, sometimes called a burlockspindle, is simple, effective, and dispenses with the usual nut and wrench.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination with the journal adapted to receive an axle and hub, and recessed at the outer end, substantially as shown, of a washer resting upon the key-shank and locking with the end of the journal, and a key turning independently of said washer, as set forth.
Signed by me, at Montandon, county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, this 24th day of February, 1898.
GEORGE W. EMERICK.
W'itnesses:
O. E. STOUT, T. F. CRAWFORD.
