COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,907, dated uly 26, 1898,

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HERMAN ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keyser,in the county of Mineral and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in a combination-tool which combines a small and large try-square, a tool for making circles or arcs, and a mitering-tool all in one implement.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a tool which can be adjusted at a moments notice to accomplishfthe ends to which it appertains, which is very compact and easily operated, and which is simple, durable, and cheap.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a combination tool embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts,substantially as disclosed herein'.

Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of my improvement with the blade in the position for laying off a square miter and having dotted lines showing the position it assumes when laying off an Octagon miter; and Fig. 3 is an end view of my improvement, showing the construction and details in putting the same together.
In the drawings the 4numeral l designates the base of the try-square, and, 2 designates the long metallic arm, which is secured to the base by any well-known means and which has graduated scales 3 marked on its inner side and having the conical-shaped openings 4 opposite the graduated scales, in which is placed the point of a pencil, and when a straight line is to be drawn itis simply necessary to slide the base of the square along the edge of the plank and the pencilpoint will be drawn along parallel with the try-square, making a straight parallel line.
Formed in the body of the arm 2 is the long slot 5, in which is adjustably secured the end of the blade 6 by means of the brass handle 7, which passes through the slot and the opening 8 in the end of the blade. On the inner side of this folding blade is the graduated scale 9, which has the conical-shaped openin gs l0 op- Vposite said scales, and by placing a pencilpoint in one of these Openings and using the opening ll as a center a circle or as many circles as desired may be drawn, or, in fact, any shaped figures, as the blade may be raised or lowered in the slot or revolved around the center, and this blade when not in use is folded back, as shown in Fig. l. This blade when extended and securely held in line with the arm 2 forms part ofthe try-square and makes the large one.
To lay off a miter of any angle or shape, it is simply necessary to bring the cut-away edge 12 of the folding blade down against the rivets or pins 13 upon the base, said pins being placed in such positions as to cause the blade to lay Od a miter of any desired shape,4 such as square or Octagon, as shown in Fig. 2.
y From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is plainly seen that my combination-tool can be used as a large or Small try-square by either closing or extending thefoldingblade. Acircle-describingtool is formed by the folding blade by revolving the blade upon its center and as a miteringtool by folding the blade backward and having its free end abut against the mitering rivets or pins secured to the base of the square.
From this construction it will be clearly understood that I provide a device of this character which is extremely simple, durable, and inexpensive, as well as very useful and practical.
