SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 607,347, dated July 12, 1898.
Application filed October 23,1397. Serial No. 656,121. (No model.)
useful improvements in mowingmachines,
more especially to the mechanism for transmitting motion to the scythe or cutter-bar; and it consists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction hereinafter fully set forth in the drawings, and described and pointed out in the specification.
The object of the invention is to simplify the drive mechanism by reducing the powertransmitting gears, the motion being transmitted to the reciprocating rod of the scythe or cutter-bar direct from the drive-wheel through the medium of a single pinion, thus reducing the cost of the machine and simplifying its construction.
In order to understand the invention, reference must be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this application, wherein-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the machine, and Fig. 3 is a front view in elevation.
The letter A is used to indicate the frame of the machine carrying the drivers seat A, which frame is loosely mounted upon the cross-axle A To this axle is rigidly secured the supporting and in the present case drive wheel B, the opposite supporting-wheel being loosely mounted upon the said axle. Upon the said axle is also loosely mounted or suspended the hanger B, the forward end there of being bifurcated and having fulcrumed therein by belt a the pinion-shaft B which shaft is free to swing laterallythat is, inward and outward. This shaft carries the pinion O, the hub O of which is loosely mounted thereon in order that the said pinion may be free to revolve with the move ment of the drive-wheel B, which wheel on its inner face is provided with the bevel gear-teeth 0 With these teeth meshes the pinionO. Consequently as the said wheel B is revolved by the movement of the machine rotary motion is transmitted to the pinion 0 and the hub O. The forward end portion of the pinion-hub works in bearing a of the lower portion of the hand-lever G which lever is fulcrumed to the frame of the machine, so as to be within convenient reach of the operator. As this lever is thrown inward and outward the pinion C will be thrown in and out of mesh with the gear-teeth C of the drive-wheel.
To the end of the pinion-hub G, projecting beyond the bearing a of the hand-lever O is secured the crankarm b. The bifurcated end 1) of the cross-rod D is carried by the crank-arm Z), being held thereon by the vertical pin or bolt 5 This cross-rod at its free end connects with the scythe or cutter-bar D and imparts a reciprocating motion thereto. As the crank-arm is carried around a reciprocating motion is imparted to the cross-rod D, which operates the scythe or cutter-bar. The finger-bar D is connected to the holding frame D fulcrumed to the machine-frame, and the said fulcrumed frame and fingerbar D are raised and lowered in the usual manner.
In order to impart motion to the scythe or cutter-bar, the hand-lever O is thrown inward, being'held in locked position by any preferred means, such as a clasp d, in order to place the pinion O in mesh with the gearteeth of the drive-wheel B. The rotary motion of the drive-wheel will then be imparted to the said pinion C and hub O and transmitted, so as to impart a reciprocating movement to the rod D by means of the crank-arm I). As the scythe or cutter-bar is connected to the rod D the motion of said rod will be conveyed to the scythe or cutter-bar D. By
simply releasing the hand-lever O and throw-V ing the same outward the pinion G will be withdrawn from engagement with the gearteeth of the drive-wheel and the operation of the scythe or cutter-bar cease.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is--- 1. In a machine of the described class, the combination with the drive-wheel, of anaxle upon which the same is mounted, gear-teeth carried by said drive-wheel, a hanger mounted upon said axle, a pinion, a supporting connection for said pinion pivoted to said hanger, a lever for moving said supporting connection on its pivot to throw the pinion into and out of mesh with said gear-teeth, a crossrod to which the cutter-bar is attached, and connection between said rod and said pinion whereby a reciprocating motion is transmitted to said cross-rod by the rotary movement of the pinion.
2. In a machine of the described class, the combination with the drive-wheel, of an axle upon which the same is mounted, gear-teeth formed on the inner face of said wheel, a hanger loosely mounted upon said axle, a pinion-shaft hinged to said hanger, a hub loosely working on said shaft, a pinion secured to said hub, a fulcrnmed lever for turning the pinion-shaft on its hinge to throw the pinion into and out of mesh with the said gear-teeth on the drive-wheel, the cross-rod to which the cutter-bar is attached, and connection between said rod and the hub of said pinion whereby a reciprocating motion is transmitted to said rod by the rotary movement of the pinion.
