WiACHlNE FORCUTTENG AN LIGHTING CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,820, dated July 5, 1898.
Application filed July 21,1897. Serial No. 645,484. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Im provements in Machines for Cutting and Lighting Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of cigarlighters which are provided with means for holding, lighting, and clipping the end of the cigar while the end to be lighted is in contact with or in proximity to a body heated to the necessary temperature to ignite the cigar.
The construction of my machine, together with the mode of operating it, is shown in the drawings hereinafter described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the position of the parts with the cigar in place 'for lighting. The position of the holder for the butt of the cigar is shown in dotted lines in its idle condition. Fig. 2 is an end view of the machine, showing the form and position of clipping-knife and lever for operating it, also the piston and cylinder in dotted lines.
A is a plate insulated from the sliding support C by the insulation D.
E is a spring which presses the sliding support C on the supporting-post G toward the knife. The sliding support C is limited in its movement by the screw F touching the ends of the slot H. The spring J is fixed to the base O, insulated therefrom by the insulation K. The knife T is mounted on the stud N and pivoted in the plate L, in which the beveled hole forms a stationary cutting edge, also a support for one end of the cigar. The piston X working in the cylinder Z is connected by the rod V to the knife T. The spring Y is mounted on the frame 0 to bear against the lever N. One terminal of an electric circuit is connected to spring J, the other terminal of which is connected to the base 0. It will be seen when the sliding support C is at rest, as shown in dotted lines, the circuit will be broken; but when the cigar is placed in position to be lighted and the sliding support C is moved back the plate A bears on the spring J and completes the circuit. The plate A is made of such material that the current flowing through it heats it to a high temperature, and the end of the cigar resting against it is ignited. If now the lever M is depressed, the knife-edge sweeping over the hole in the plate L severe the tip of the cigar, at the same time raising the piston X, and on being released is forced back by the spring Y, and the piston X, moving downward through the cylinder Z, draws a current of air through the cigar, which aids in the ignition.
The construction and arrangement of the various elements I use in myldevice may be Varied widely without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Now, having described my device and its mode of operation, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a cigar clipper and lighter in combination, a clipping mechanism, a body adapted to be heated to the desired temperature for lighting a cigar, a holder to hold the cigar in contact with or in proximity to the body to be heated, and means for actuating the clipper and heating the lighting-body.
2. In a cigar clipper and lighter in combination, a cutter, a holder for one end of the cigar, electric wires, a lighting-body at the other end of the cigar, with means for sending an electric current through the lightingbody.
3. In a cigar clipper and lighter in combination, a cutter, a support for the end of the cigar to be cut, located in proximity to the cutter, a holder for the other end of the cigar,
a body carried thereby and adapted to be heated to a lighting temperature by an electric current when the cigar is placed in the holder.
4. In a cigar lighter and clipper, the combination of a cutting device, a supporting device, a lighting-body, and means for heating the lighted body at one end of vthe cigar and for drawing the air through the other end of the cigar.
5. In a cigar clipper and lighter, electric connections, a lighter, a support or supports for the butt-end of the cigar, by the movement of which a circuit is formed and the lighting device heated and means for clipping the cigar and drawing a current of air through it.
6. In a cigar clipper and lighter the comb? nation of an electricaiiy-heated body for1ighting the cigar, the clipping device and the piston acting in conjunction therewith for the purpose specified.
