Patented June 28,1898.
IAAAAAAA K L AAAAAAA WITNESSES UNITED, STATES f PATENT OFFI E. 1
JOHN H. SHAW, OF NEwIIAvEN, CONNECTICUT, A'ssIeNo TO THE SARGENT & COMPANY, OF SAMEPLAGE.
KNOB ATTACHM E NT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,590, dated June 28, 1898.
. Application filed March 5, 1898.
' To all whom it 11 mg concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SHAW, a resident of the city and county of New-Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knob Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which-- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a knoband spindle embodying my invention, the sleeve being shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the knob; Fig. 3,an end view of the knob by itself; and Figs. 4, 5 and 6, similar views of the sleeve, knob-shank, and lockingwasher, respectively. In all figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.
This invention relates to door-knobs, and more particularly to that class of knobswhich may be accurately adjusted longitudinally on the spindle without the use of screws and be secured against any possible disadjustment during the ordinary movements of the knob in operating the lock of the door.
The invention consists in the novel combination of' the various portions of the knob with the spindle by which the former is easily and accurately adjusted against the escutcheons of the door and prevented from accidental displacement.
In the drawings, A represents a door-knob, and B a spindle separate therefrom, rectangular in cross-section, the corners I) being screwthreaded in Well-known manner. The knob is provided with a rectangular axial perforation a, corresponding to the spindle B, which is adapted to be received therein, Fig. 2. The knob-shank O is formed separate from the knob and is internally threaded, as shown.
at-c, to mesh with the screw-threading b of the spindle. At one end of the shank O is an annular flange c, on the inner side of which are a series of recesses or scallops 0 arranged radially and equidistant from the center of the shank.
A flat interlocking washer D is provided with a central rectangular perforation d, corresponding with the cross-section of the spin- Serial No. 672,697. (No model.)
dle B, and onits periphery are two oppositelydisposed lugs d, rounded to correspond with the recesses c of the shank G, into Which they to its proper position and the interlocking washer D slipped on the spindle, so that the lug d will fit in two of the recesses c of the interior of the flange c. The whole washer thus fits within the flange c, as shown in Fig. 2, and the shank is held against rotation while the washer is in such position. To hold the Washer, the knob A is slipped on the spindle into juxtaposition with the washer-D and end'of the flange c of the shank C, while the sleeve E is screwed'on the hub of the knob and holds the parts together in engagement, Figs. 1 and 2. The shank is held rigidly on the spindle B until the sleeve E is unscrewed from the knob A, the knobs A withdrawn from the spindle, and the washer D removed from its position in the end of the shank O.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is s 1. In a door-knob, the combination With the knob; of the spindle formed separate therefrom; an independent knob-shank, adapted to be screwed onto said spindle; an interlocking not capable of longitudinal movement on said spindle but incapable of rotation independent thereof; means for locking said nut -with said shank, and a sleeve adapted to fit knob-shank adapted to be screwed onto said I spindle, and havinginterior recesses at one end; an interlocking nut adapted to slide on In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my said spindle but incapable of rotation indehand this lith day of February, A. 1). 1898. pendent thereof, being provided with lngs TONY H SHAT adapted to engage in said recesses of said 5 shank; and a sleeve adapted to engage said Vitnesses:
shank and knob and hold them together, sub- \VM. II. KIRSCHNER, st-antiaily as described. 1 ELLA A. FEEHAN.
