IMPROVEMENT IN FASTBNING SLEIGH BELLS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNE e Be it known that I, I. H. ABELL, of East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Sleigh Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a central section of my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar section of the bell detached.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of 'the spring-catch detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a 'll-shaped double-hook spring-catch in combination with a sleigh bell provided with a slot or mortise to receive thehook-shaped ends of the spring-catch in such amanner that, by passing the hooks of' the catch through the strap or other material to which the bell is to be fastened,
. andforcing them into the slot of the bell, they spring apart over` the inner edges of said slot, and the bell is firmly held in its place. Y
A represents a sleigh bell made in the usual manner, but without a shank. Instead of the shank it is provided with a slot, a, and by these means a large quantity of stock is saved, the bell being rendered much lighter than a bell provided with a shank in the ordinary manner. The slot a is intended to receive the hook-shaped ends, b, of the spring-catch B. This catch is made of sheet metal, which is doubled up and brought in the shape of the letter T, as clearly shown in the drawings. The ends of the shank of this T-shaped catch form the hooks b, and if these hooks are forced through the strap or other material to which the bell is to be fastened and into the slot a, they spring apart and catch over the inner edges of said slot, and the bell is securely retained in its place. By these means a cheap and convenient fastening for sleigh bells is obtained, and the cost of the bells is materially reduced. l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The spring-hooks b, of the catch B, adapted to enterthe slot a,l`oi` the bell, and hold the bell by the expansion of the Shanks of the hooks, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
I. H. ABELL.
