WRITING-BOOK COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,180, dated June 28, 1898.
Application filed September 30,1397. Serial No. 653,538. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CLARENCE J. AINS- WORTH, of est Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Book Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved book-cover when opened and containing a writing book and copy, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Fig. 2 is a detached side or edge view, upon an enlarged scale, of the device which I employ for holding said writing book and copy in the cover. Fig. 3 is a plan thereof with its pivoted arm swung to one side and the copy-holder partly broken off for convenience in illustration. Figs. 4 and 5 are sections through the back of the book-cover and ends of said device for holding the writing book and copy, taken at the points indicated bylines a and'b, respectively, in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse section through the back strip of said holding device, taken on line 0, Fig. 3, upon a still larger scale than said figure, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Figs. 7 and S are a plan and edge view,respectively, of
the central part of the device, showing a modification in the construction, which will behereinafter described; and Fig. 9shows another modification in the construction, also hereinafter described.
My invention relates to improvements upon the writing-book cover patented in the United States by J. M. Kent September 6, 1887, numbered 369,532, and which was assigned to me September 3, 1897, and recorded in the United States Patent Office.
My said improvements relate to the means for holding the writing book and copy in the cover, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to better understand the nature and purpose thereof, I will now proceed to describe the same more in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, A represents the bookcover, which may be of any desired construction. In this instance itis provided with a pocket A in one end for the reception of writing materials, due. B represents a writing-book placed in said cover, and C my improved device for holding said writing-book and the writing-copy D in the cover. Said holding device 0 consists of the flat back strip d, having the ends at d curved over, preferably eye-shaped, and the end (1 provided with a pointed end 01 for the purpose hereinafter described. Said fiat back strip dis fastened with its back against the inside of the back of the book-cover, with the ends at d flush with the edges of said book-cover, as is shown in Fig. 1. To said back strip dis pivoted at 6 under the curved end d one end of a swinging arm f, which may be of any desired shape in cross-section. It is preferably a thin fiat strip, similar to the strip d, only narrower, as is shown in the drawings. In the free end thereof is formed a transverse hole f, through which the pointed end 61 of strip d may be inserted to hold said swinging arm in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the writing-book B under the same. Upon the swinging arm f is in turn mounted the adjustable swinging arm 9 for supporting the writing-copy D at different points in the width of either side of the writing-book B. Said swinging arm g is pivoted at its inner end to a slide-bearing g, fitted to slide longitudinally 011 the arm f. It may be arranged to slide thereon by fitting around the body of the arm, as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or it may be arranged to slide in a longitudinal slot f in the arm, as is shown in Figs. 7 and 8, or in any other suitable and convenient manner. In this instance the inner end of the arm g is pivoted to bearing g by forming a square bend at said inner end of said armwhich fits in a socket formed on said bearing, as is shown in the drawings, and is thus permitted to swing to either side, so as to bring the writing-copy (suspended thereon, as is shown in Fig. 1) to either side of the writing-book, as previously stated.
The object of curving the ends d 01 as previously described, and shown in the drawings, is to form supports or bearings at each side of the center flexible portion of the bookcover, so that the leaves of said book-cover may always be closed evenly-that is, with all its outer edges even with each other. lVhen no support of this nature is employed, as in the patented device hereinbefore referred to, the back of the cover being flexible causes the leaves of said cover to wabble about in closing the cover, and said leaves or sides are folded together unevenly, and consequently the edges are uneven, projecting outside at the ends or sides beyond those of the other and presenting an unsightly appearance. By the use of the curved ends on the strip (1 the inner sides or leaves of the book-cover come against the sides of said curved ends (1 61 and by thus forming a support between the leaves of the cover when closed serve to guide and hold said leaves, so that they will fold as evenly as the leaves of the covers of any ordinary printed book. This feature I find in practice is of great advantage over the patented device previously referred to. In view of said device, however, I limit my invention to the specific construction herein described, and pointed out in the claims.
If desired, .the arm f may be pivoted, as shown at e in Fig. 9, so that it may be swung up instead of to one side without departing from the principle of my invention.
By the use of my improved device any bookcover or portfolio of the proper size may be readily converted into a writing-book cover, said device being easily attached to the inside of the flexible back, as previously stated, and shown in the drawings.
The operation of applying a writing-book is also very simple, it being only necessary to press 011 the free end of arm f to detach it from the pointed end (I and then swing it over, place the Writing-bookin position,swin g the arm back again, and refasten it under the hooked end d The swinging arm g may also be easily adjusted up or down and swung around to bring the writing-copy at any desired elevation on the writing-book, at either side of the same. As a pivoted arm carrying another adjustable pivoted arm is already covered in the patent to J. M. Kent, previously cited, I make no claim, broadly, to said features, but limit my invention, as above stated, to my specific construction.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The book-cover A, in combination with the writing-book and copy-holder device 0, the latter consisting of the back strip cl attached to the flexible back between the leaves of said book-cover, and having the curved and preferably eye-shaped ends (1 (Z with the end (I terminating in a pointed or hook end d the swinging arm f, pivoted at e to one end of said back strip d, and adapted, at its opposite end, to be attached to the hooked end (Z the slide g fitted on arm f and the arm 9 pivoted at one end to said slide 9, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In awriting-book cover, the combination of the book-cover with the back strip having the eye-shaped loops formed on the ends thereof, said loops being bent upward, i11- ward and downward to form supports for the leaves of the book-cover when closed; means for fastening the back strip to said bookcover, and the swinging arm pivoted at one end to one end of the back strip andadapted to be .detaohably fastened at the other end, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
