SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,961 dated June 21, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO KURZ, a subject Improvements in Mop Holders and Wringers;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

'My invention relates to a novel construction in a mop holder and wringer, the object being to provide a device of this kind of simple, durable, efficient, and cheap construction and effective operation; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a mop holder and wringer constructed inaccordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View of the lug for locking the crank-arm in its folded position, taken on the line 4 4c of Fig. 1.

Referring now to said drawings, Aindicates a frame composed of an arched piece of sheet metal, the lower ends of which are recessed and form bearings for the shaft of a roller 1. Said arch A is bent to an inverted-V shape or angle-iron form,so as to give it greater strength without increasing the Weight of my device: On the upper middle portion of the said arch A a socket-piece 2 is mounted,which is adapted to receive a handle or stick 3. Adjacent its lower ends and on the inner face of said frame A guides A are mounted, in which the lower end portions of spiral springs 5 are adapted to move.

Said springs 5 are situated within said frame A above said roller 1 and are compasses through said loops 6 in said lower ends of said springs 5 and thence into the recesses 7 in the end portions of the frame A, where they are journaled. Said loops 6 project beyond the lower ends of said frame A and serve as sliding bearings for the roller 8, thus keeping said roller 8 normally pressed into engagem cut with the roller 1 and forming a wringer. The mop 9 is held between said rollers 1 and 8. Said shaft of said roller 8 is provided at one end with a flat-projection or key 10, having two'ears 11 and 12. The inner end of a crank a'rm 13 is pivoted in said ear 11 and is provided, adjacent said end, with a slot 14, which is adapted toreceive said car 12. Ohviously when said ear 12 is in said slot 14 said roller 1 can be turned by said handle 13 and thus operate said wringer. \Vhen it is not desired to use said crank-arm, the same is swung out of engagement with said ear 12 and into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, so that the handle 15 thereof lies above the adjacent portion of the frame A and out of the way. Said crank-arm is locked in this position by means of a flat projection 16 on the adjacent side of said frame A, which is provided with two small recesses on its side edges and which is adapted to enter a slot 17 in said crank-arm and receive the wire composing the same in its recesses in an obvious manner.

Although I have shown the key 10 and arm I 13 composed of wire, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the use of this material, as other materials could obvi: ously be employed with equal advantage.

I claim as my invention l. A device of the kind specified comprising an arched frame provided with a socketpiece on its upper or arched portion and recessed at its ends, spiral 1 springs mounted within said frame and provided with loops cesses in said handle to hold the latter against removal, and the lower ends of which form loops which project below the recessed ends of said frame, a roller journaled in said recesses in said frame, a roller journaled in said loops and adapted to be held by said springs normally in engagement with said first-named roller, and a crank-arm on one of said rollers to turn the same.

A device of the kind specified, comprising an arched frame provided with a socketpiece on its upper or arched portion adapted to receive a handle, spiral springs mounted within said frame the upper ends of which enter openings in said socket-piece and recesses in said handle to hold the latter against removal, and the lower ends of which form loops which project below the recessed ends of said frame, a roller journaled in said recesses in said frame,a roller journaled in said loops and adapted to be held by said springs to receive a handle, spiral springs mounted within said frame the upper ends of which enter openings in said socket-piece and recesses in said handle to hold the latter against removal, and the lower ends of which form loops which project below the recessed ends of said frame, a roller journaled in said recesses in said frame, a roller journaled in said loops and adapted to be held by said springs normally in engagement with said first-named roller, anda crank-arm pivotally mounted in one ear of a key on one of said rollers and provided with a slot adapted to receive the other car thereof, and a lug on said frame adapted to enter a slot in said arm and" engage the same to lock said arm against said frame, substantially as described.

5. In a mop holder and wringer, a roller 3' ournaled within a frame and provided at one end with a key having two cars, a crank-handle pivoted in one of said ears and provided with a slot adapted to receive said other ear, aprojection on'the frame of said device, and a slot in said crank-ar1n adapted to receive said projection and engage the same to lock said crank-arm in a position folded against said frame when out of engagement with said last-named ear of said key.
