Be it known that I, FRANCIS LEROY Hons-- POOL, residing at Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Door for Steam-Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates generally to doors for steam-boiler furnaces, and'more particularly to one used in connection with a draftopening above the fire, and also'to a defiector-plate. v
The object of this invention is to provide a furnace-door which will save time and labor in firing a furnace and will also admit the required amount of air above the-fire in the fire-box to supply oxygen to complete the combustion of the carbon'of the fuel and to economize in the consumption of fuel, the door being made in sections capable. of independent operation, whereby it may be kept partially or wholly open. w
Another object of ,my invention is to pro- .vide a furnace-door with a draft -'regulator the fire-box above thefire;

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction,'arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter fully-described and afterward specifically pointed out in the claims.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention most nearly a'pper tains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referencebeing had to the accomfication, in which Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of the eaban'dboiler-head of a locomotive, showing my invention in place, the door being wholly closed. Fig. 2 is asimilar view showing the door and fram e, with the door partially open, as in'use, while the engine is working steam. Fig.- 3 is a similar view showing the door entirely open. Referring tothe drawings byjletters, A is the boiler-head of a'locomotive', in the openin g of which issecured'a door-frame B, having an outwardly-projecting fiange'C, overwhich the door fits when closed. Thedoor is hinged to the frame B at the bottom by means of hinges D and is composed of two sections E and F, these sectionsbeing secured together by hinges G, so that thewh'ole'door may be closed, the upper section aloneopened, or both sections opened.

A latch I upon the upper section of the door engages a latch I on the door-frame and serves to hold the upper section closed. The bell-crank lever II is provided with a handle 11*, by which it and its fellow lever 11 may be manipulated. The lower section E of the door is provided with a series of draft-openin gs J, which may be regulated in extent or wholly closed by a plate K, slidably secured 011 the inner side of the door. This plate is vertically slotted at L L, and bolts M, passing through said slots, entering the door-section, serve to hold the plate slidably against the inner side of the door-section. On the outer side of the door-section is pivoted a lever N, having its inner end slotted horizontally, a bolt 0 passing through its slot, and a vertical slot P in the door-section enters the draft-plate K, whereby the oscillation of the lever on its pivot vertically will carry the draft-plate with it to partially or wholly close the draft-openings J.
Pivoted to one of the flanges G of the doorframe B is a baffle-plate or deflector R, which is as wide as the door and a little longer and normally rests in an inclined elevated position, the edges being bent downward and the side edges inclined slightly toward the center, whereby air entering through the door is deflected and prevented from coming in direct contact with the crown-sheet of the fire-box or hues of the boiler. The pivot Q of the deflector-plate is extended through the flange C of the door-frame and is provided with a rigid crank-like arm S, which has a threaded opening through which passes a bolt T, having on its outer end a hand-wheel U, whereby by turning the bolt inward or outward through the crank-arm S, with its inner end bearing against the door-plate, the deflector-plate is adjusted in position higher or lower, as may be desired. This deflector-plate serves also to conduct the coldair draft to the center of the fire-box, thereby supplying oxygen at the proper point to complete the combustion of the carbon of the fuel.
The provision of a door made in upper and lower sections permits the furnace to be fired without the necessity of opening and closing the whole door, and inasmuch as the door is partially open allthe time during the firing and is partially open all the time while the engine is working steam a sufficient amount of oxygen is admitted to the fire to complete the combustion of the smoke and coal-gas, whereby the objectionable black smoke is dispensed with and much waste avoided.
By having the door open horizontally instead of vertically, as is the case with doors in general use on our railroads at the present time, it may be made of sufiieient width and it will be entirely out of the way of the fireman, thereby facilitating his work.
XVhile I have illustrated and described the best means now known to me for carrying out my invention,I do not wish to be understood as restricting myself to the exact details of 0011- struction shown and described, but hold that any slight changes or variations, such as might suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic, will properly fall within the limit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination in a steam-boiler furnace with the door-frame, of a door comprising an upper and a lower section, the lower section being hinged at its lower edge to the door -frame, and the upper section being hinged at its lower edge to the upper edge of the lower section, and bell-crank levers pivoted near the upper corners of the door-frame having their horizontal arms which pass along the upper edge of the door-frame arranged to move synchronously and provided at the lower end of their vertical arms with horizontal points adapted to project outside of and lock the lower section of the door, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a steam-boiler furnace with the door-frame, of a door comprising an upper and a lower section, the lower section being hinged at its lower edge to the doorframe, and the upper section being hinged at its lower edge to the upper edge of the lowersection, the lower section being provided with draft-openin gs, a slidable plate on the inside of said door-section for regulating said draft-openings, and a lever pivoted 011 the outside of the door and connected through the slot in the door with said slidable plate whereby the same is operated, substantially as described.
